Never Have I....Wait, Actually I Have! (2)

Happy Memorial Day to my US friends! The last rendition of this post got not one, but TWO of my long time lurkers to come out of the blog commenting closet and join in, so I thought that I may as well do it again and see what happens! To be fair, one of them (Hi Mr. B!) has commented before, but the other (Hi Funky Bunch!) was a TS virgin before this. Maybe I can get Bugsy and G-Money to chime in this time...

By the way, I was very happy to find out last time that I am not the only one who wets my pants from time to time. I am sure it will only be getting worse, not better, as time goes by, and I am glad to have company!

Without further ado, here are some things that I have never done in my life. Let me know in the comments, have you ever done these things?

1. Gotten a tattoo [Let me tell you, my parents were not happy!]

2. Been fly fishing [If you have never done this, I recommend it. It is very meditative and not boring at all!]

3. Seen an alligator [I've nearly stepped on one too]

My next door neighbor in Gainesville

4. Had a pet lizard [Bearded Dragons]

5. Smoked a cigarette [It was in my experimental days and I would not want to do it now]

6. Ridden on a subway [so many times!]

Antalya

7. Seen an elephant in the wild (aka not in a zoo) [Thailand, Malaysia (pigmies! They were so cute!), Africa]

Pigmy elephants are still pretty large!

8. Dated someone from a different country than I am from [actually several...and you thought I was boring!]

9. Ridden in an 18 wheeler [Africa]

10. Read two books at the same time [Nowadays I nearly am always listening to one and reading one]

11. Been on TV [after the Boston marathon bombing, I got interviewed on our local news station!]

2013 Boston Strong run organized by the Pavement Runner

12. Been to the doctor/hospital in a foreign country [Ug. Several...Mexico, Uruguay, France, Türkiye (surgery even!)...I think that is it! Does getting a COVID swab in Austria count?]

Luckily I did not need this one

13. Sang karaoke in a bar [Many times. My go to was usually a Grease related duet with a friend of mine, and I was always John Travolta, because you know why? Because I got chills, and they're multiplying!]

[Actually, funny story, a friend of mine had one of those karaoke microphones that you plug into the TV and we had hotel security called on us because we were doing karaoke in my room, in the French Quarter of New Orleans no less, which is kind of known for its rowdy characters!]

Tell me, which of these have you done? Feel free to elaborate! (Copy and paste by highlighting below and clicking CTRL-C, the click CTRL-V in the comment box.)

    1. OMG, i was actually going to put a foot note on that one that Nicole would be so happy!! But I changed my mind. That note about boring was for you! How'd you know?

I hope that your year of the elephant is excellent! İt's so fun to see them for real; they are so huge and seemingly gentle although I know that's probably just me being naive.

    2. Oops forgot to say that I feel like there is a movie where someone belts out You're so Vain drunkenly in a bar?

  3. Oops, I missed #10 somehow. Yes, I do it all the time.

    1. Haha! Wow, not too many yes votes! Yeah my cigarette days were stupid and I really don't enjoy the smell or the taste to be honest but sometimes there is a time and a place. Actually now the busses stop a lot for smoke breaks and I am tempted to get out and smoke just to have something to do. But I won't! Don't worry!

  5. Whoa, there are lots of things on this list that are a never for me. 2.5/13:

Smoked a cigarette - kinda but not really. I've taken a few puffs over the years.
Ridden on a subway - yes, most recently two weeks ago today on BART
Read two books at the same time - guilty as charged!

    1. Thanks goodness for Mrs. B; without her you may not have three of these!! I can imagine you doing karaoke in a bar...not!! We're you drunk? That does not seem very much like you!!

I have done karaoke in front of people at a bar, never without drinks though, and have also done it in a private room (much more fun/less embarrassing) and in my hotel room!

    2. Alcohol was definitely involved. Let’s just leave it at that.

      Delete
  7. I have also been fly fishing, smoked a cigarette (why????), ridden on a subway, read two (or more) books at a time, and sung karaoke (once, so I don't have a go-to). And I have been IN a hospital in a different country; does that count? I lived in Prague for a summer and one of my classmates required emergency surgery, so I went to visit in the hospital. It was... different from a US hospital. But he got great care!

What is your tattoo and where is it?

    1. Are the cigarette, most of us like to experiment a little, but hopefully we grew up and out of that fast! Funny, nobody who has commented actually smokes!

  8. Okay, here's what I have done:

Gotten a tattoo - I have five and want more!
Seen an alligator - I live in Florida!
Ridden on a subway - yes, in Boston!
Read two books at the same time - often, I'm reading three and sometimes it can be as many as five. I HAVE A PROBLEM.
Been on TV - yup! I was on this Christian TV show called The 700 Club when I was very little.

Singing karaoke is on my bucket list. I always get too nervous to do it!!

    1. Okay, you definitely need to explain how or why you are reading five books at a time.

And re karaoke, I think we need a karaoke meet up. It's so fun to sing, plus I know you have a great voice (I do not)!

    2. I think the 5 books happened at one point. I was reading a nonfiction book slowly (so maybe a chapter a day or something like that). I was reading a romance and another fiction book, which is typical for me. I was listening to an audiobook. And I might have been reading a book for NGS's book club, so I was only reading the weekly portion on the weekends. I don't recommend this!

  9. Seen an alligator--Domestically, in Florida
Smoked a cigarette--I used to smoke in college (in class, too--it was allowed back then!)
Ridden on a subway--in NYC and I did not enjoy it
Read two books at the same time--in college all the time and always during CBBC
Been on TV--in high school on local TV; I was once interviewed by the producers of the Jay Leno Show for a possible spot; I was also mentioned on the Conan O'Brien show; he said I was a "really good writer."

    13. Sang karaoke in a bar (and if so, what song is your go-to?)

    3. Oh, it was such a long time ago--November of 2008, I think?

I had another blog that was born from a goofy sidebar feature at The Dept. in which all I did was creatively describe and critique Brian Williams' ties when he used to do the NBC Nightly News. All of a sudden, it blew up. An AP writer (David Bauder) called me for an interview and his story was picked up by a bunch of newspapers all over the country. I was interviewed by a lot of radio morning shows and by Cleveland Magazine. Then some morning shows called, too. Unfortunately, they didn't like the fact that I had a real job and couldn't just take a random morning off whenever, sitting by the phone, waiting for their call, so I couldn't do most of them. The Today Show did a workaround story about the blog by just showing the blog and using snippets of the article. TV Guide put the blog on its Hot List.

One day, I got a call from The Tonight Show. Its producer interviewed me about a possible appearance. She asked me to send a few photos. But that was the time when Leno was leaving Tonight and Conan was coming in. I got lost in the shuffle, I think (or my photos were scary).

Conan O'Brien did have Brian Williams on the show and asked him about my blog. He read him several entries and referred to me as "an excellent writer." BW was always aware of my blog, but was never really happy about it. As part of a fundraiser in NYC, he donated several autographed ties, and my descriptions went along with them. The organizer, who got to know me through my blog, sent me one of the ties as a gift.

After BW left The Nightly News, I ended the blog, but it's still online if you want to see it and read some of the entries. I didn't just describe ties; I wrote microfiction to capture the mood of the ties. It's <here if you're interested.

  10. 3. Seen an alligator - Yes, I've traveled to Florida and Louisiana.
    4. Had a pet lizard - Yes, I had a pet gecko in college.
    6. Ridden on a subway - Yes
    7. Seen an elephant in the wild (aka not in a zoo) - No, and I have to be honest that it terrifies me that big animals are just roaming the same planet as me. Like there are elephants and lions and moose out there. AND I WALK AROUND WITH JUST MY FISTS AS PROTECTION.
    8. Dated someone from a different country than you are from - Yes, when I thought about this, I realized I dated a Canadian AND an guy from England. But they'd both been the States so long that I didn't really think about it much. The guy from Canada said processing weird and once waxed on for like ten minutes about how great Saturday mail was, so it did come up every now and then.
    10. Read two books at the same time - All the time
    12. Been to the doctor/hospital in a foreign country - I was born in a hospital in Germany. Does that count? I'd give myself half credit for this.
    13. Sang karaoke in a bar (and if so, what song is your go-to?) - Yes. My go-to is "Delta Dawn" by Tanya Tucker.

6.5/13 - That seems okay to me!

    1. Wow, you have done a lot of the same things! I laughed at your Canadian comment; did he say PRO-sess, rather than Prah-sess, because I say the latter but most Canadians I know say the former. Also, Saturday mail? What does that mean? We had mail delivery on Saturday and the Post Office was open in my area.

I think you can count the Germany birth, even though it was not by your choice, nor do you recall. However, you were in the hospital in a foreign country!

  11. 1, Gotten a tattoo - nope. No interest
    2. Been fly fishing - nope, but my dad did take my brothers and I fishing on a chartered boat in Lake MI one Mother's Day (only day the charter was available?). It was supposed to be my brother's best buddy - but he cancelled last minute, so I was forced to go. My brother and I were terribly nauseous and we hated it.
    3. Seen an alligator - yes, while visiting my in laws in FL multiple times
    4. Had a pet lizard - nope
    5. Smoked a cigarette - nope
    6. Ridden on a subway - yes - I once lost 9 yo Reg on the DC metra. One of the scariest experiences of my life. A good Samaritan brought him back to the stop where I'd gotten off.
    7. Seen an elephant in the wild (aka not in a zoo) - no
    8. Dated someone from a different country than you are from - I dated a few guys from Ireland the year I studied abroad. ;)
    9. Ridden in an 18 wheeler (bonus points if you have driven one!) - rode in one while hitch hiking in Ireland during year abroad
    10. Read two books at the same time - I doubt it
    11. Been on TV - yep, Interviewed on multiple local tv stations when we sued our school district last year
    12. Been to the doctor/hospital in a foreign country - Yep, again during study abroad. I got very sick. Might've had pneumonia
    13. Sang karaoke in a bar (and if so, what song is your go-to?) -Maybe? I remember going to a karaoke bar on my first date with Coach, but I'm not sure I sang. I think I just watched other people make fools of themselves. ;)

Your story about losing Reg makes me shiver. Pre cell phone I assume? Or if not, I guess he probably did not have one so there is no way to contact him. I can kind of see why parents want their kids to have phones while also not wanting their kids to have phones! Also, my 18 wheeler story was also hitch hiking! Those guys are great! They even let my ex-boyfriend drive for a while! Hahaha! I probably need to read back on your blog posts, but...sued the school!? That sounds stressful.

  12. Ummmm, Nance's blog about Brian Wiliams' ties! I can't even think about anything else now!

  13. Yes to 3, 4, 5 (just once and I threw up, so was never tempted again!) and 6 (lots of times.) And yes to 8, 10 and 11. Oh, and yes to 12 (remember I lived in Germany for a while in my 20s and early 30s.) Never sang karaoke and have no plans to. Probably won't get a tattoo (but you never know.) Never seen an elephant in the wild. But hmm, I've really done the majority of these! I feel so... old (?)

  14. The only alligator I’ve ever seen was at the SF Academy of Science, I can’t remember his name. I used to love the occasional Camel Unfiltered while out drinking in the late 80s, but not since. Karaoke yes, once, never again. I would smoke before I sing again.

  15. I remember Nance’s BW tie project, though I never watched the news so I only knew it through her. FUN THOUGH.

I tried to comment but it disappeared, so I’m back.

I saw the alligator at the SF Academy of Science, does that count?
I smoked for a bit in college, only in bars, Camel unfiltered. Delicious. (Gross)
I sang karaoke once, Addicted to Love, late 80s. I’d rather smoke, honestly.
I’ve been on plenty of subways…BART, SEPTA, the TUBE, and the METRO. I don’t think I’ve ridden in NYC, but maybe?

    Great list, great pictures!

    1. Your comment probably disappeared because I have it set that I have to approve them if they are older than a certain amount of days. Only in bars! Hahaha!! My parents owned a bar and I remember when it became outlawed to smoke inside and the regulars were pissed. Of course, my Mom was mad (she smokes) but my Dad was not (he got chronic bronchitis from tending bar as a non smoker for many years). They got over it pretty quickly though (the regulars, not my parents).
