Things I Do Not Buy

I noticed the other day that although I have not bought toilet paper since March of 2022 (a 24 pack), I still have seven rolls left in my overflow stash. This could be partially because I bought a bidet in September 2022, which has drastically cut down on my TP use! The other thing is that I am at work four or five days a week for eight or ten hours, so many of my potty trips are at work. However, I was quite surprised to find that it had been that long when I looked back at my Amazon history. I do suspect that I probably had several left over before I bought the last pack, but I am surprised to still have some left! Question: How many rolls of TP do you go through each month?

Sign in hospital bathroom. Hands? Really?

The other thing I rarely use is paper towels. I bought a Costco pack of 12 rolls when I moved into my house in May 2015 and I (a) still have two rolls left and (b) have given away at least six of them if not more. I just do not use paper towels! If someone comes over for dinner I will use them but otherwise, I use a rag to wipe the floor or the counter (a clean one!) and if I am eating dinner alone, I just use a dishrag as a napkin too. I have a set of older dishcloths that I use for those kinds of things, and a set of new ones that hang on the sink for wiping dishes or whatnot. Question: Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels?

I have actually never used Doordash or Uber Eats. Once at work, I had to order for a group, so I have a Doordash account, but I have never had food delivered to my house. I tend to cook at home and am happy to eat oatmeal for dinner if I have not had a chance to go shopping, or I have a commercial district with restaurants and a grocery store about a half a mile from my house so I can just walk to get food. A coworker of mine ordered Chipotle through Doordash and he said that it cost like $40 with the delivery, food and tip, and I cannot imagine spending that much on Chipotle. You do you and all, but that is not where I want to focus my spending personally. Question: What is the weirdest thing you have ordered for delivery?

After having several purges and getting rid of many books, I set the goal to not buy anymore until I had read (and given away) the ones on my shelf that I had not yet read. Confession: I still have a couple on my shelf that I have not yet read, but except for those two, I am reading 100% library books now. In the past 10 years, I have bought very few books. I did go to Powell's in Portland about five years ago and I used a gift card that was given to me to buy a few travel books. However, I am now down to only about 20 books on my shelf, which are mostly books from my childhood, and I do not have any plans to buy more books any time soon! Question: Do you still buy books?

Powell's is awesome.

I love going out to eat as much as anyone else, but there are a couple of things that I never order at a restaurant. The first is spaghetti. Don't get me wrong; if I am at an Italian restaurant and they make their own pasta, I will go to town on some ravioli or tortellini, but I will likely not order spaghetti. The other thing is roast chicken. If I am going to pay for meat at a restaurant, I feel like it should be one that I don't or can't cook. Fois gras? Yes please. Duck? Sign me up! Rabbit stew? You betcha! Roast chicken? Nah, I can make that at home. Question: Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant?

Exception to the rule: chicken and waffles!

Years ago, I realized that it is so much easier when hiking or traveling to just bring smaller tampons with me. I should have swapped long before that, but at that point, I finally made the switch to applicator-less tampons. I hated using the plastic tampons due to environmental issues and the ones without an applicator are not really any different. I do wish that I would have heard about or tried the Diva cup earlier, as I think that would have also been a good way to not have to use/carry so many feminine products on long hikes! Question: Have you tried the Diva Cup (or equivalent)? If so, what are your thoughts?

List of questions:
How many rolls of TP do you go through each month?
Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels?
What is the weirdest thing you have ordered for delivery?
Do you still buy books?
Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant?
Have you tried the Diva Cup (or equivalent)? If so, what are your thoughts?

Feel free to answer one or all of the questions above, or tell me what things do you NOT buy?

  1. I honestly have no idea how many rolls of TP our household goes through each month. I'd say probably 12? We do use a lot of paper towels because we use them for cleaning a lot, particularly pet messes. What I'd give for a cat who doesn't puke semi-regularly.

Big secret. I don't know if I've ever ordered food delivery in my entire life. Maybe pizza once or twice in college? I can't quite remember, but I almost never eat in restaurants and takeout charges are just more than my frugal brain can wrap my head around.

I don't buy books for myself. I do buy books for other people! But I am the queen of using all of our library services.

    1. 12 rolls of TP seems like a lot. No judgement, but it does make me wonder if I am miscounting! I once lived with my parent's friend and he used to complain all the time that I used so much TP. Probably because ladies need it with #1 and #2, whereas he did not use it all the time like I did. Anyway, it's been about 25 years since I lived with him and he still brings it up!

I am totally with you re food delivery! I would guess that in college someone else may have ordered it and I ate it but I really don't think that I ordered anything either. I also agree about takeout charges. I have maybe gotten takeout a handful of times (notably when I would go to NYC for work, I did it once or twice) but am more apt to buy bread and cheese and go home and make a sandwich or something.

I also buy books for other people; that is a very common gift! However, the last few times I have had gift cards to stores (Powells for example) so I haven't even had to spend any real money on the gifts!

  2. How many rolls of TP do you go through each month? Too many. I feel like we go through SO much TP. But my husband and I both work from home, have two kids, and quite a bit of company.
Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels? I go through a roll of paper towel every month or two? Not much. I don't own any cloth napkins, use napkins 1-2 times/month so they last forever. I have 4 dish towels total.
What is the weirdest thing you have ordered for delivery? I have never ordered any food online for delivery. IN MY LIFE. Never UberEats etc.
Do you still buy books? Rarely. 1-2 a year, on average, I would say? I am a library gal all the way through.
Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant? We almost never make spaghetti at home, either. Weird. It's so easy and we always love it when we have it.
Have you tried the Diva Cup (or equivalent)? If so, what are your thoughts? I just wrote about Diva Cups today! I have been using menstrual cups for 20 years. It's a gamechanger (especially since I've had an ablation and now only need a Diva Cup).

    1. Another person who has not ordered delivery! Interesting! Maybe it is not as common for the older generations, but I feel like a lot of younger people do this all the time! When I say younger, I guess I am talking about the people I have worked with who are ~ 30 years old; they scoot, they order Doordash etc. It seems like such a normal thing for them. We lived in the middle of nowhere and could not even get delivery if we wanted to. In fact, even if you are doing a construction project, you cannot get Home Depot to drop off lumber! So I guess I got used to that?

I will go and read your post now, as I am so curious about the Diva cup. I have only had one friend who used it and she said it was a gamechanger when traveling!

  3. I love this post! We also never do food delivery or postmates. For the price I would rather buy food!

I feel like we go through a roll of TP every day right now. It’s probably not so bad but it’s a lot!

We use paper towels but not a lot, we definitely use clothes more but use paper towels when people visit, or sometimes when we eat messy foods like tacos.

I never bought books for years and recently decided to buy some books to support authors I like. Mostly I buy second hand from world of books if my library doesn’t have what I want. But 90% of what I read is from the library!

Interesting post for thinking about things we consume! I feel I’m in a high consumption stage of life now but hoping it wil go back to normal soon-ish.

    1. I love your paper towel comment about tacos! It reminds me of the Trevor Noah bit about his first time trying tacos; have you seen that? If you have not, you should watch it! https://youtu.be/xoAU85wS1x0?si=wrDlQTRH0DQk71ar

  4. How many rolls of TP do you go through each month? I am not sure but we go through a decent amount. We have had to reorder it far less now that I'm back in the office 3 days/week. I probably account for 90% of the TP usage in our house! Phil thinks we could use less, I disagree.
Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels? We go through a decent amount of paper towels and napkins but we can compost them so I feel less bad about that? I only use cloth napkins for special occasions but I do like using them when I do. We change our dish towels weekly.
What is the weirdest thing you have ordered for delivery? I can't think of anything weird we've had delivered! We do use food delivery services but very sparingly. Our take out is mostly take and bake pizzas that we pick up. We only order Indian food and maybe 3-4 times/year? The Indian place we like is a good 20 minutes away so it'd be a 40 min round trip kind of thing and we are usually feeding the kids while waiting for our food delivery so it's just best to pay up a bit for delivery. We would never do it like weekly.
Do you still buy books? I only buy kids books generally since they will get read multiple times and I like having books around for them to pull off the shelf. I rarely buy books for myself unless it's something I think I might want to reference in the future, like a non-fiction book about raising kids or a book around grief.
Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant? My ordering is so limited by my gluten intolerance, so since I am already limited, I don't have any other rules around what I should order. But I totally see your point about not ordering certain things. I do like a really great roasted chicken, though, so that is not something I wouldn't order!
Have you tried the Diva Cup (or equivalent)? If so, what are your thoughts? Yes, I tried the diva cup and it was an epic fail. I had to change it more than the average person since I tend to have heavy cycles and changing it made the bathroom look like a crime scene. This is absolutely NO WAY I could change it at work! So I gave up it and now use organic tampons.

    1. I was wondering about the messiness of the Diva cup! I usually have a couple of heavy days and would also be at work, but my thought was that while hiking I would only need to carry one thing. However, now that you mention that, I wonder if it would be too messy or unsanitary, since you know we don't really shower very often when hiking and although I do have hand sanitizer, I don't carry soap usually.

I also compost my paper towels that I do use, and maybe that is better than washing dish cloths? However, I don't really dirty them often so I find a dish cloth is easier to just wipe if needed and wash. I don't have a strict schedule for washing them. I definitely do them at least once a week as I do laundry once a week and I always round up all the towels at that time, but I may retire one even earlier than that if I need to.

  5. Hee hee...I'm laughing at the difference between my TP and paper towel expenditures as a single lady vs for a family of 4. Back in my single days I kept enough in stock so that I wouldn't run out but it was somewhat casual. Now these are mission critical items for our house and our stock levels are two Costco packages of each. Since the pandemic I'll let things get down to one package before I buy more but I don't sail any closer to the wind than that. I realize also that I didn't answer your question about how much we use - I have no idea besides a lot but I don't have to buy them very often. Like you, I use a lot of cloths for cleaning but if there's something that's better done with a paper towel I don't hesitate to use it.

I've never used Door Dash or Uber eats either and don't plan to.

The library is always my first choice but if they don't have it or if I'm really hot to read something and the wait is too long then I'll just buy the book. Priority on the ebook though because it's easier/doesn't take up shelf space.

And finally...this is TMI but I take the pill continuously so I never get a period. This works really well for me but I understand that it's not for everyone. I've keep my last box of tampons for the day when I have to go off the pill or if we ever have guests who need one.

    1. Nothing is TMI here! That is interesting that you say that, as my GYN said I could do the same with the ring, just leave it in for an extra week if I wanted to. I feel like that could wreak havoc with your hormones though? Have you had any issues with anything else happening?

Re TP, I agree that being a single lady definitely makes it easy to control and to count! I am also a frugal TP user anyway, whereas my brother said that his girlfriend uses like 40 squares per wipe so they go through a ton! I am more like a four square per wipe, even for #2 because of the bidet!! So there you go re TMI!

  6. very interesting post.
How many rolls of TP do you go through each month? No idea but I guess quite a lot because of kids.
Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels? no, we don't use paper towels, we use cloth ones but we do have tissue papers because kids again.
What is the weirdest thing you have ordered for delivery? I don't like takeouts in general, they never taste as good as served in restaurants.
Do you still buy books? Yes, mostly kindle.
Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant? anything I can make at home I wouldn't order, that's quite a lot of things.
Have you tried the Diva Cup (or equivalent)? If so, what are your thoughts? never tried, seems too much hassle.

    1. I agree with your restaurant comment. I usually would not order what I can make, but the caveat is "what I cannot make easily." If it is a dish I can make, but it takes a lot of time, I may order it at a restaurant. For example, I CAN make Indian food, but it is so nice to get it out, and then I also get to order five things and don't have to make all five of them!

  7. Hubby and I both work from home, but I';m not sure how many rolls we go through. I have a subscription which is 48 rolls every 10 weeks, but I had to skip our last delivery.
We don't use paper towels or napkins. I have cloth napkins and I always use cleaning cloths and tea towels to clean up.
I occasionally buy books that I think I'll do some rereads of or that I can't get at the library, but mostly I borrow books.
I love ordering duck or fish when I go to a restaurant. If I go to a pub I will usually order a Parma and sometimes I just really love a good steak when I'm out.
I use a cup. I mainly changed because of the waste, but it is also good because it has a bigger capacity and doesn't need to be changed as often.

    1. I love ordering duck while out, and a friend of mine and I kept a "duck list" for a while where we would rate each restaurant's duck! I also like ordering steak as it is not something I buy or cook at home usually (not that I couldn't, I just don't).

Now you are making me wonder if my rolls were a 48 pack! I did have a subscription too but had to cancel it as I just had WAY too much TP!

  8. Man, I'm going to be the outlier here with my responses. HA.

How many rolls of TP do you go through each month? I don't keep track, but I maybe 3-4 rolls a month. I work from home so...

Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels? I probably go through 2-3 rolls of paper towels a year. I don't like using paper towels if I can help it, but it's useful to have them on hand for quick cleanup when necessary.

What is the weirdest thing you have ordered for delivery? Once, I ordered Dramamine because I was having a terrible vertigo episode and then getting nauseous from all the spinning. Ubereats will pick up a CVS order if you need them to! Ha.

Do you still buy books? Oh yes. Books are my decor aesthetic. Hehe.

Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant? I don't really have anything off limits. Sure, I can make spaghetti at home but I don't make it with fresh pasta or REAL pasta sauce. What I get at a restaurant is VASTLY different than the canned sauce/mass-produced pasta I buy from the store.

Have you tried the Diva Cup (or equivalent)? If so, what are your thoughts? I haven't, though I want to! I'm just intimidated by the process of using it, lol.

    1. Your comment about the quality of the restaurant food is a good one. I think that I do that with certain things but not with others; for example, I can make Indian food but they do it much better than me at certain restaurants! Same goes for many of the quality ethnic foods. Of course I can make a taco, but it is so nice to get the slow roasted pork, the good salsa etc. at a taqueria instead of trying to do it myself!

  9. How many rolls of TP do you go through each month? I have no idea. I buy giant packs and always have some in backup.
Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels? I was always shocked as a kid at paper towel commercials, because I didn't know people used paper towels to clean up messes. I use dish cloths, scrubbies, or microfibre cloths. Paper towels just seem so wasteful. We have them in the house for the occasions that I don't want to use cloths - let's say, for example, Rex throws up. I use a paper towel. Paper towel packs can last me for years.

Do you still buy books? Yes, I just pre-ordered a few books last week, and I ask for books for Christmas and my birthday. I like to have some in my library at home and also, I am interested in pre-ordering as it really helps new authors.
Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant? I rarely eat out, so I guess I don't really have an answer.
Have you tried the Diva Cup (or equivalent)? If so, what are your thoughts? I've never tried and I'm nearly at the end of my period life, so I am not going to.

  10. I'm not sure how many rolls of TP I go through in a month, but I buy a huge pack at the warehouse club about 2-3 times a year or so.
I do use paper towels, but not as my go-to. I have two cats, and the Hairball Situation...well, you know. I also have paper napkins on hand for when my mother visits a week each month and has to have them for every meal and snack. I used cloth napkins exclusively for a while, but my husband and I don't generate a whole lot of laundry, and I wondered about the value of doing small loads often merely to keep up with napkins. (I wash his stuff separately from mine--allergies.)
I buy books; I do not use the library because I have to give the books back. I don't like that. I like having a personal library, and I donate books that I'm not interested in keeping to the Little Free Libraries and local library for their book sale.
We eat at a favourite restaurant about 4-5 times a year--a local place with a great chef. I don't order things I can make at home anywhere, and fish, shellfish, and duck are always my go-to. I'd never order something mundane like spaghetti unless the pasta was house-made.
I don't have a food delivery account, and we don't even have pizzas or sandwiches delivered. We live conveniently close to both options if we decide to have either one.
As far as a Diva Cup, never tried it, and I'm all done there!

    1. You are lucky to be all done! I am looking forward to that. Oh yes, cats and hairballs! I used to find the grossest little puddles around the house when I had a cat. I will admit, I do not miss that. I used to use the dishtowels and a spray cleaner to clean those up too. I do my laundry once a week and I have a lot of dishrags so I don't generally have to do a separate load for them unless I have a huge spill or something really nasty.

  11. We use way too much TP and PT (paper towels). It's embarrassing how many paper towels we use. I think maybe I should just 'forget' to buy them and see if people can adjust to using dish cloths instead.

We used to have food delivered when we lived in San Francisco ( back in the early 1990s), just pizza or Vietnamese food with no delivery fee. Same thing in Philadelphia. When we moved here (late 90s), we couldn't find any places that we like that delivered. I've never used Doordash or Uber eats or anything like that. We get take out once a week, and we go pick it up.

I still buy books. I love the bookstore experience too much. I donate them to the library if I don't want to keep them, but I do need to purge pretty soon.

I haven't tried the Diva cup. The first time I got my period, my mom didn't have any pads in the house. I'm not sure how she has a preteen girl and is completely not prepared. She gave me OB tampons to use, which HELL NO I was not going to try. I had to put toilet paper in my underwear for the night, it was late on Thanksgiving day, nothing was open. I sure would have liked grocery store delivery back then!

    1. Your OB story is funny. I don't remember when I started using tampons, but my friend's 13 year old is scared of them. I keep telling her we can show her/help her/walk her through it, but she is sticking to pads for now. However, learning on an applicator free version would be hard. My aunt used to use OB and I once had to use one of hers as a teenager and I don't think I did it right because what followed was an uncomfortable day! Luckily now I have gotten the hang of it, but it does require a bit more handwashing.

Funny that your Mom had no pads! My Mom used to use these super thick and bulky ones, which I quickly learned were not good for me. Then I had to ask my Dad (so embarrassing!) to get me thinner ones at the store because the ones my Mom used were like diapers!

  12. Ooooh, great topic! In spite of the fact that we use cloth napkins and dish towels, we still seem to use a lot of paper towels. I like to reserve them for things like cleaning up cat throwup, but sometimes I'll catch my husband drying a dish with them or something- WRONG!!! Toiler paper... we use SO MUCH. I should get a bidet.
i never use door dash or Uber eats- we get takeout once a week, and it's usually Chipotle and I go there to order it in person. Being vegan, I'm VERY picky about watching them make my food- I'm afraid if I order it, it will arrive with meat or cheese. Plus why pay extra when Chipotle is about a mile away???
I don't get periods anymore (hooray menopause, best thing ever!) but I did use a diva cup for years. The non-applicator tampons were always hard for me to use, somehow. Wow. I really don't miss those days!

    1. Hah! That is how I feel about the Diva. I (HOPE I) am near the end of my period life too! I am not against trying new things, but don't know if it is worth it at this stage. Although, who knows, maybe it will be 10 more years! I hope not.

I love that you pre-order books to help support authors. I never really thought about that, although I should have, as my brother's winery used to do that with wine. Really the funds (and the emotional support!) they would get for futures helped them with current costs a lot, especially when they were just getting started!

  13. I have no idea how much TP I go through--and with the different sizes rolls come in, I feel like "a roll" isn't the best unit of measure, you know? Not to criticize the question! But it's like when a banana bread recipe tells you to use so many bananas, which makes me crazy because they aren't all the same size!

Ahem. Anyway. We don't use a lot of paper towels but I prefer them for cat-puke cleanup, so we do always have a roll around. I've never used Ubereats or Doordash or any of those. When I loved alone, I would sometimes get a pizza delivered, but more often would get takeout to bring home instead. I definitely do buy books, but only a few authors; mostly I use the library.

    1. You are right; a "roll" is not a good unit of measurement! My Mom uses single ply as they have septic and her rolls last way longer than those fluffy Charmin double fluff 2-ply rolls! I swear with those, one wipe and you are onto the next roll!

It seems that cleaning cat puke is THE THING to use paper towels for! I would agree although I did use a cloth for that if it was not too chunky (TMI?). Cleaning cat puke makes me gag, and the thinness of a paper towel sometimes does not seem like a big enough barrier between the puke and my hand.

  14. Take two! I commented a few days ago but it disappeared.
How many rolls of TP do you go through each month? Absolutely no idea. I always have a 24-pack on each floor as backup.
Do you use a lot of paper towels, napkins, cloth napkins, or dish towels? I don't use a lot of paper towels, I was always shocked at commercials, when I was a kid, that showed people cleaning up messes with paper towels. It's just so wasteful to me. That said, I do use them sometimes, if the mess is something gross like dog barf, and I use them a bit to absorb liquid for tofu or a salad, but mostly it's dish cloths or microfibre cloths.
What is the weirdest thing you have ordered for delivery? I have ordered lip balm for delivery, in the pandemic.
Do you still buy books? Yes, I buy a few a year, and I receive some as gifts. I just pre-ordered three books as I'm interested in having them in my library, plus pre-orders help out new authors a lot.
Is there something that you rarely or never order at a restaurant? I rarely eat out, so I'm not sure. I guess something I often make at home, like pasta.

I was just like you; I had TP on a subscription and the rolls just kept on coming. Then one day a couple of years ago, I realized that I had WAY TOO MUCH TP so I turned off the subscription and I am still working on using them. I would say that it speaks more to my buying too much TP in the beginning rather than me being a very frugal TP user, although I am probably that too.

Lip balm! That is funny. Pandemic times are kind of an exception I think. Desperate times and all. I love that you help out new authors! Re the Diva, I am similar to you where I am (hopefully) getting to the end, so likely will not change now but it always seemed interesting to me.

When I first moved into my house I wanted some plants and I found a guy who was selling them on Craigslist so I went over to this stranger's house and bought a bunch of them. Funny that now that seems fairly normal but at the time it was maybe a little more risky feeling.

  16. This is a super-interesting posts and I am sure opinions will differ on the different topics. We have never used Uber Eats or other delivery services. I just don't want to stomach the service charge. Jon usually picks up if we order takeout.

I usually get all my books from the library these days, although I have splurged on a book here and there when there was an Amazon deal for like a couple of dollars.

I have not bought a diva cup although I have considered it. My period has always been very light though and so I didn't feel too bad using tampons. I was however appalled to see that it was really hard to find tampons without applicators in the US. What a WASTE of plastic! In Germany, you almost exclusively get the (o.b.) tampons without the applicator and for years, I always brought them back after a visit.

    1. We have had OB since I was a kid, as my aunt used to use them and I once used one of hers when I was in high school and I hated it! Of course, looking back now, I realize I just did not use it properly! I had a really hard time finding tampons when I was in South America! I was in Bolivia and I did not really know the word for tampon and I was trying to find one in a small village and it was impossible! I am not sure what their normal routine is for that kind of thing, but I think it is less common to use tampons down there! Note to self, if going to SA, bring peanut butter and tampons!

  18. We go through quite a bit of TP b/c there are 3 of us. C has been known to drop an entire role in the toilet accidentally... I think our reaction to that was enough that she's not done it again that we know of. I'm guilty for using a lot of paper towels, namely b/c it's how I clean up after Jack. I suppose that I could do a better job of using rags. I'm super guilty of using Amazon for delivery items like shampoo and toiletry items b/c it saves me having to go to the store. DoorDash is a guilty pleasure but I redeem work points for credit and you can use the app to order food to be picked up and so Chipotle doesn't cost me additional b/c I walk to pick it up but I use the app to save me the time of standing in line. I still buy Kindle books although right now I'm using Kindle Unlimited since I've just found a new author I love and her books are available on Unlimited. I try to order menu items that I know Michael won't cook, I'm pescatarian so it's usually a fish dish that looks amazing! I haven't tried Diva Cup but I have heard good things.

    1. I like that you order foods that Michael won't cook; that means that he must be cooking a lot!! I often order foods that I don't want to cook also, or that take a lot of steps. Like I love a good pho, which I think takes days to simmer and get all the flavor into. I could probably make it, but why do it when (1) they do it so well (2) it is cheap!?
