As I mentioned in my last post, I was out of cell and internet service for most of October because I was walking the Scottish highlands, and when I wasn't out of service, I was either looking at the weather or my next route on a trail, or I was spending time with friends. My friend has two kids and we spent hours talking about the different ways to say something in Scottish vs. American English. It was loads of fun. Mostly it was them making fun of me, but in a very loving way. For example, they thought it was hilarious that I say trash instead of rubbish, candy instead of sweets, store instead of shops, or gah-rahge instead of gare-idge (garage).
We had a long talk about the difference between squash (concentrated fruit "juice" that you add water to before drinking), soda (and how people in the US also call it pop or coke), and fizzy drink, which is what they call soda. Also, their favorite, and something I learned from their Mom (or Mum as they say) about 20 years ago, our pants are their trousers, and their pants are our underwear. So if you tell someone you are not wearing pants, you may get a "wee giggle" from them!
Please copy and paste the questions at the end and add your answers to the mix!
Where was I? Scotland and England
1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? January: Baguettes and Many Steps
February: In Like Minnesota; Out Like Hawaii
March: Wet and Wild
April: My Life is in Ruins, and Beaches Too
May: Al Fresco
June: Tales as Old as Time: The Christianity and Wine Versions
July: Quick and Dirty: the Baltics and the Balkans Adventure
August: The Dark Tourist
September: Recharging The Batteries
October: Blown Away
2. What did you learn last month?
I had a marvelous time at the (free) Highland Museum in Fort William, which had a nice display about the Jacobite Rising and Bonnie Prince Charlie. It is still a bit confusing figuring out the royals (like James, who was Catholic and ended up being King of both Scotland and England, but in Scotland he was James VI and in England he was James I, because they were still ruled separately at the time). Anyway, Bonnie Prince Charlie was grandson of James VII (who was grandson to James VI, are you still following this?) who was the last Catholic ruler in Scotland, but had been banished to France when the protestants took over the throne. Bonnie Prince Charlie fought to win the throne back, but lost. Hence no Catholic leader. While hiking, I also got to go past some areas where battles were fought, which tied it all in nicely. Plus despite being a lot of sex and kilts, Outlander does talk a bit about some of this history (side note: I have not seen the show, but I did see some of the places it was filmed apparently).

3. What was the weather like where you are?
It came in like a lion and out like a bobcat. The month started off with Hurricane Amy and gale force winds and rain. I think in some of the western islands, the winds were supposed to be 60-90 mph! However, I was in the highlands for that, and I would guess they were in the 30-50 mph range where I was. I did have a few wet and windy days, but after that blew away, I had a couple of basically nice fall weeks! I was pleasantly surprised as I had steeled myself for rain every day. I would say in the 31 days, it probably rained all day maybe 5 of them, rained a bit maybe 10 of them, but the rest were pretty nice (about 2-12 degrees C most days / ~ 35 - 55 F)! I call that a win.
4. What event last month was your favorite?
Spending time with the kids was fun. We played games, talked about fruits vs. vegetables, learned about mammals, did quizzes and just had fun hanging out. Of course it was great to see my friends too, who I haven't seen since 2009. 16 years is too long between visits!
And also this! I got to see the "Harry Potter bridge" where they fly the car under it.

5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month?
Book:
The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb. This book is a little disturbing as it starts off with a tragedy. However, I couldn't help but relate to all of the characters, even when they were not necessarily aligned. If you read it, tell me, what do you think about Corby, the main character? Do you want him to be forgiven?
Movie/Show: I had a lot of fun watching the show Traitors with my friends. It is kind of silly, but it is like the game Murderer that maybe you played when you were a kid. There is one or more Traitors and the other people are Faithful and they all have to try to figure out who the traitors are before they get killed. I only watched one episode, but it was entertaining.
Podcast: Do you like true crime podcasts? You might like
Paradise! It's about an English couple who turn up dead in the water off the shore of Guatemala. Who killed them? Listen to find out?
6. Tell us one funny recent story.
I don't know if this is funny, or just fun. As I was walking over a creek on a bridge, I saw a blue heron down below so I stopped to film him and all of a sudden he flew and then landed in the water and was flapping around. I thought he had gone mental until I saw he had a fish in his beak. The fish must have been about a foot long and they thrashed about a bit before he let the fish go in a small pool of water then sat pecking at it a bit. I think he was waiting for me to go to eat it, so I left. But I got it all on film! It was the coolest thing, and I was telling the kids that I feel a bit like David Attenborough!

7. What are you looking forward to this month?
I am looking forward to a few things! Time to catch up after being out of touch all month, visits with friends, maybe a bike ride (?) if the weather holds up, and also, I will start to slowly make my way back home at the end of the month! More on that later!

NOVEMBER:
7. What are you looking forward to this month?
Bonus question! Have you ever seen a bird catch a fish? Or any other strange David Attenborough moments?
What a great month you had! I want to also add "knickers" to the "pants" conversation. Love UK English! I love language differences so much.
ReplyDelete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? Rock the casbah!
2. What did you learn last month? I learned a LOT about Moroccan water supplies, isn't that a random but important thing!
3. What was the weather like where you are? Right now it's 3 degrees and will probably warm up to around 9 or 10. Possible rain today, but no wind.
4. What event last month was your favorite? A night in the Sahara!
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? Oooh what was it. I had some 5 star reads but they were rereads - The Joy Luck Club and Songs at the River's Edge. I also really liked How To Walk Away and The People We Leave Behind. You just reminded me I need to put up a post about the books I read in Morocco!
6. Tell us one funny recent story. It's on my blog but I had a communication breakdown in Morocco and got hit on, which rarely happens these days, so it's both notable and funny!
I love learning about water supplies etc. It IS a random but important thing! We do take a lot for granted and it is good to go and see how other people live and to see what they have to do to get things. The first time I went to Edinburgh they were talking about throwing their chamber pots out the window back in the day and wow, it made me happy to have a toilet! Haha! You got hit on! Nice! I will go and read the story!
DeleteOoh, this sounds like an adventure! I love hearing about the different words we use- I'll bet the kids did find a lot of ours funny.
ReplyDeleteTo answer some of your questions- October is the month where our weather starts to change, and we actually got down to the 50s a couple nights! Woohoo! Let our beautiful weather season begin! (I'm sure everyone will be happy not to hear me complain about our weather for a while). As usual, the month was a blur- but I had some really nice long runs. And I visited my son! That was the highlight of the month for me.
Looking forward to your return to the US : )
Plus you must have PSLs by now, right? I know that you are a fan of the pumpkin! I am so glad that you got to see your son; I bet that was special! Also long runs! I am kind of jealous, but not really that motivated to do it myself! Haha.
Delete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? Fall Foliage, Friends...and lots of Walking.
ReplyDelete3. What was the weather like where you are? Pretty darn nice. We had a lot of sunshine, but then some good amounts of rain which are so needed in this part of the world because of the wildfire situation.
4. What event last month was your favorite? I really loved my visit with Kae and SHU (and it was so fun to go to Starbucks with them + my daughter). And going to visit my parents. Reading The Trolley Car Family at night to my son. Finding Peppermint Mocha creamer at the grocery store.
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? I loved The Correspondent!
7. What are you looking forward to this month? Christmas preparations, my parents arriving for the winter. Crossing some things off my to-do list which seems...so long, right now. So very long!
I have The Correspondent on hold, but am still waiting....! It is probably for the best though, as I am going to have busy time starting in about 5 days and then won't have downtime until late November, so I don't see myself getting a ton of reading done until then. My list is long too, but I am sure, given your news, you are feeling that scrambling feeling! I get it!
DeleteI've seen birds catch fish, but I'm not sure that I've ever seen a heron specifically catch a fish. Something always makes me want to cheer when I see it. I know it's bad luck for the fish, but I can't help but be happy for the bird.
ReplyDeleteOK, let's get into it!
1. It's Really Happening (as in I really quit my job! I did it!!!)
2. Is it learning or reflection to say that I spent a lot of time realizing how unhappy my job was making me? The biggest issue is that time spent at the job was crowding the activities that make me happy out of my life.
3. It was still insanely hot. There were a few weekends where I stayed home instead of going out to hike because it was just too hot. Then out of nowhere the weather decided to cool down. Nothing crazy, it's still very pleasant. We had a couple of days of rain, but overall it's still very dry.
4. Last month I was mostly home and work bound so I didn't do a lot. My best moments were dog related: making the rounds of our city parks at lunch, meeting up with my SIL and her dog at the dog park, and going hiking with the dog and Hubs.
5. It was a very slow month for reading, and that's OK. I made up for it by starting a project to rewatch all of the Alfred Hitchcock movies in reverse order, and I'm enjoying that very much. I get to see the movies, and then I get to write about them.
6. The last month is a total blur. Hopefully the "stop and smell the roses" moments will be fresher in my memory now so I'll remember more of the funny things.
7. You know what I'm looking forward to in November and I'm living it right now. It's 8:46 and I do not have to wrap things up so that I can log into my work! I'm on a trip this week which is great but I also can't wait to get back home and have TIME to do everything that I want to do. No more plodding around like a zombie to cook and clean - I'll have time to figure out what I want to cook and to be able to improve our living space instead of just maintaining it so these will now be creative outlets instead of "I have to" energy drains. I'll have time to hang out with people! Plus Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday!!!
You are going to have an excellent month! I just know it! I know that feeling of finishing work but then launching into something else, but I think that is kind of the way of it. You are like me in that you don't want to waste a minute of your new free time....at first! Then it will level out a bit, but for now, it is hyper adrenaline time! Yay! Have fun in Toronto!
DeleteOCTOBER:
ReplyDelete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? Therapy is an oxygen tent
2. What did you learn last month? I learned a lot about trauma and how to recover from PTSD
3. What was the weather like where you are? The month started off so very hot (80s!!), and then ended quite cold (upper 30s/low 40s)
4. What event last month was your favorite? I really enjoyed the pumpkin event at the zoo. The artistry is incredible and I complimented the boys on how well behaved they were!
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? I've been loving the great british baking show! I will be so very sad when it's over next week! My best read was probably the Melinda French Gates book about transitions but it was just the gentle, reflective read I needed.
6. Tell us one funny recent story. I've already shared this on my blog, but when we were making plans for Halloween, I laughed when Paul said "we'll go with mom first and then we can put dad in and go out for another round." Put dad in! Lol. I was happy to be benched since it was in the upper 30s and drizzly!
In November I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving. We are going to my brothers' house in the burbs and I'm bringing fall-shaped sugar cookies to decorate as a bday celebration activity for Taco. He turns 5 the next week so his bday often gets lumped in with Thanksgiving. But that means he gets to celebrate with some of his cousins which he loves!
Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday. I don't feel the pressure, and it is about pumpkin and eating and being with family...so nice. I feel like Christmas should be the same but sometimes it gets a little over the top! I read your story about subbing in Dad! Is that because he is like the closer? Or because Paul wants 2x the candy?

ReplyDelete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that?
The New Normal
2. What did you learn last month?
I am more patient than I thought.
3. What was the weather like where you are?
Cool and windy
4. What event last month was your favorite?
We had Theo overnight, and all that time with him is so precious.
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month?
I loved the book Meet Me In Another Life by Catriona Silvey. And I'm addicted to the game show The Floor--so much so that I was really irritated when it was preempted by a World Series game!
NOVEMBER:
7. What are you looking forward to this month?
Less stress? Please? And Thanksgiving. I love turkey, stuffing, real whole cranberry sauce, and turkey gravy.
I hope your Thanksgiving is chill and not stressful at all! My Mom makes whole cranberry sauce; it is tradition! I do love getting together with the family and being in a warm house smelling of food! I have never heard of The Floor, and I have not read Meet Me in Another Life either! I have some reading, watching and doing to do!
Delete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? Liar Liar Pants of Fire (this because Kay lies to us all the time and it is so exhausting) Alternately: Tailgating for the Win (because I was at ND tailgating three Saturdays in a row).
ReplyDelete2. What did you learn last month? That Lad really IS a great salesman
3. What was the weather like where you are? Mild. I think our fall has been mild and I'm here for it. It wasn't too cold to walk or run outside and it didn't rain a ton. Bonus.
4. What event last month was your favorite? The tailgate we hosted. It was a blast. Most of our kids showed up
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? I read Heartwood and I really liked it.
6. Tell us one funny recent story. Well, I didn't think it was funny, but apparently I looked hilarious Sat night when I struggled to get up off the floor after I'd laid there while watching a movie. Curly was dying laughing. Um, I would've laughed too but my back was a mess and I was not playing.
NOVEMBER:
7. What are you looking forward to this month? Thanksgiving because most or maybe even all of my kids will be home. Also, the start of Curly's basketball season
You are the tailgate queen! It seems like you are always surrounded by fun people and excitement (and maybe some lies, but I hope the fun outweighs the not-fun!) OMG are you STILL having issues with your back? I am so behind, but that has been going on for a long time now! BOOOO! But yay to turkey!
DeleteKyria - I'm happy at least to be back running, as not running didn't improve the back 'bruised feeling section'. I'm not in so much pain that I can't function daily. It's at its worst when I get out of bed in the morning. I've left multiple messages after dropping off a copy of my MRI. Weeks ago. What's next doc? Goodness.
DeleteWhen we were in London, my mom and I kept referencing some of the language differences, like calling trash "rubbish," and "going to hospital" rather than "going to the hospital," and "toilet" for "bathroom." There were a few more that we got a kick out of!
ReplyDeleteThe Traitors is one of my favorite reality shows! I've watched the US, UK, and Australia seasons, and wish there were more I could watch on Peacock but that's all they've given me. WAH.
Ah thanks! I did not know if that was something we could watch or not, but did you know that they also have a board game that is pretty fun except not as good with younger kids, because they are not so great at lying/intrigue (well, some of them aren't!)
DeleteBeautiful pictures! I’ve not been to Scotland (yet) but my BFF has been several times and LOVES it, so perhaps we’ll end up there someday.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely check it out! It is a pretty place with lots of history, nice people and fun music and traditions!
DeleteHi Kyria!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to see an October update.
OCTOBER:
2. What did you learn last month? That we didn' t go apple picking and that we are okay lol
3. What was the weather like where you are? A golden fall wth a few rainy days but those we were welcome as well.
4. What event last month was your favorite? Halloween of course. We had a block party :))
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? Listened to my regular rotation of podcasts: Suze Orman, On Money by Farnoosh Torabi, Best Laid Plans, the Best of Both Worlds. But nothing stood out to me.
I love those golden fall days! And if there's no rain, it's even better!! A block party sounds fun. I was talking to my brother about how it seems more towns are doing designated trick or treating areas near him, which I thought was interesting.
DeleteThat blue heron hunting moment is so cool! How neat that you captured it on video!
ReplyDeleteI was impressed! I mean, I would have loved it either way, bit I did get lucky!
DeleteAs you know, I LOVE the Outlander series (FIRST AND FOREMOST the books, but I also enjoy the show!) and the historical facts/accuracy is what is a huge factor. I love historical fiction.... and I am definitely jealous that you got to see some of the sites in person! So cool.
ReplyDeleteThat was me.
DeleteI guess I need to watch the show someday so I can see all the places that I saw in Scotland! They were also filming something when I was hiking near Loch Lomond but I have no idea what it was. I need to see if I can figure it out.
Delete
