What I Learned, Looking Forward, Looking Back: September 2025

September was a great month. In fact, September may be close to May in being one of my favorites. I love the not so hot weather, lack of big crowds and bugs, cooler nights and quiet days. I was happy to spend most of the month in a mountain town and I really got to recharge my batteries after a couple of months of more planning and being on the go.

Please copy and paste the questions at the end and add your answers to the mix!

Where was I? Bulgaria

1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that?

January: Baguettes and Many Steps
February: In Like Minnesota; Out Like Hawaii
March: Wet and Wild
April: My Life is in Ruins, and Beaches Too
May: Al Fresco
June: Tales as Old as Time: The Christianity and Wine Versions
July: Quick and Dirty: the Baltics and the Balkans Adventure
August: The Dark Tourist
September: Recharging The Batteries

2. What did you learn last month?

I learned how to mail myself something in Bulgaria, which may sound easy, but it is not what I expected. You do not get things mailed to your address (and the addresses are not always what they say they are either); instead you have it mailed to a central company, which is not the post office, but is instead privately owned. I guess it is similar to living in a rural place, as in the area I grew up in, the UPS driver may not know where to leave a package if you put in your address; instead, most people get things mailed to a PO Box, which is kind of a pain when you need to get something send via UPS or Fed Ex, as they do not mail to PO Boxes. However, in Bulgaria, I still am not sure how the private mail company makes money, as I went to pick up my stuff and I didn't have to pay any sort of service fee. Maybe the sender pays them? This I have not yet learned.

3. What was the weather like where you are?

It was GREAT! The highest high was around 70 and the lowest low was maybe around 40 and the days were clear and the sky was blue and I skipped and pranced all around, whistling a happy tune all month.

4. What event last month was your favorite?

Skipping and prancing and whistling a happy tune, of course! No really though, I met up with some people for a hike, some different people for dinner, went bike riding with a friend, met a running buddy, and went to the big city to sleep on a friend's couch and visit. It was a good month socially, outdoors-wise, weather-wise, and everything. Plus I got some future travel plans booked! It was a productive month.

5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month?

Book: It was a rough reading month. I only read eight books and DNFed two books in September. None of them were FABULOUS!, but the best one I read was Vera Wong's Guide to Snooping on a Dead Man. You can't help but get annoyed by, and love Vera, all at the same time.

Movie/Show: I finally watched The Pianist! Having been to Warsaw recently, it really helped cement some of the details of the uprising in my mind.

Podcast: I started listening to a new one called Backpacker Radio, as I wanted some inspiration, but I am not really sure how I feel about it yet.

6. Tell us one funny recent story.

I can't really think of one! Your turn!

7. What are you looking forward to this month?

The Cool Bloggers Walking Club, obviously! :)

    2. I learned that Canada was founded in PEI in 1864 (formalized 1867) at a delegation with Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI. Everyone except for PEI joined the confederation.
    3. So good! It's still warm enough to wear shorts, but cool at night and in the mornings.
    4. My favorite in a month of favorites was just hanging out with Elisabeth and her family.
    5. I barely read last month! The Road to Tender Hearts was my best read, and my best watch was season 1 of The Gilded Age.
    6. My funniest moments of the month were cracking jokes with Belle. A lot of people confuse Ohio with Idaho or Iowa, but she kept calling it Utah, and it stuck.
    7. Duh, Cool Bloggers walking and IT'S MY LAST MONTH AT WERK!!!!

    1. Last month at work!! Yay! That is definitely a reason to celebrate! I get people calling Ohio Iowa all the time. I think the four letter thing makes it confusing? Idaho is a little further away, a longer name, and a different shape, so that one doesn't make as much sense to me. Utah, well...haha! To be honest I sometimes forget whether Saskatchewan or Manitoba are further west, as they seem similar to me (flat, cold, grain growers and gas).

  2. 1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? Transition Time!
    2. What did you learn last month? That high school, at least for my teen, is a lot less horrible than middle school. Cue jazz hands.
    3. What was the weather like where you are? Hot, sunny, DRY.
    4. What event last month was your favorite? Meeting Birchie! I cannot believe that people come to see little ol' me. It was great to show her around Nova Scotia. And I LOVED Rear Window.
    5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? The Enchanted April was my favourite book. Favourite thing watched was Rear Window!
    6. Tell us one funny recent story. I can never think of anything on the spot.

  3. We can get packages delivered to our door, but because we live in an apartment block and who knows whether we'll be home when the packages come we mostly send them to a special address that is at the post office (they call it a parcelpost address) and pick them up from there. I would love to hear more about your time in Bulgaria.

    1. Your post sounds similar to theirs! I will definitely have to talk more about some of my travels at some point. I'm currently out hiking and will definitely need to get back to a computer and get my thoughts sorted a bit first! Spoiler alert: I loved Bulgaria!

  4. SEPTEMBER:
    1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that?
    Falling Behind
    2. What did you learn last month? I learned that I CAN run, because not running didn't help my back pain - so running it is
    3. What was the weather like where you are? so much warmer than it should be for the month of Sept. I did love it, because it was warm during the day but it cooled off enough in the evening that it was pleasant and AC wasn't necessary
    4. What event last month was your favorite? tailgating with Mini and her friends (didn't go in the game, but drove in and spent time with the gang and then raced home to see our kid before homecoming and then we attended a fundraiser)
    5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? I really liked Heartwood and I've recently discovered Amy Poehler's podcast: Good hang. I love it
    6. Tell us one funny recent story. After a recent tailgate - I was sitting outside a bar with three of my kids and their friends. there was an apartment building across the street and two college girls leaned out on their balcony. Tank calls to them, "Aim for the bushes!" (this is a line from a very goofy movie called The Other Guys. My kids found this movie hilarious. Apparently these girls had never seen the movie, so they didn't respond but we were dying.

    OCTOBER:
    7. What are you looking forward to this month? possible more tailgating. Having Reg home for a week.

    1. Haha! Is aiming for the bushes in reference to peeing or vomiting? Enquiring minds want to know!! It sounds like you are enjoying football season a lot! Where I'm from it is not that big of a deal but I lived in Gainesville for a while and those people loooove their college ball!

  5. Kyria, you expect me to learn something EVERY MONTH?! ;-) Okay, I did learn something, which is that Massachusetts has a set sales tax for the whole state and does not allow local municipalities to set their own!

Love that the weather had you prancing and whistling. That is a delightful image. It seems as though our weather has finally taken a turn toward fall-like. High in the mid-60s today! I am Here For It!

    1. I like fall but I don't love rain, so let's keep it dry Suzanne!! Yes, I prance, whistle and sing, but not generally in front of people!

Massachusetts also keeps their license plates, so if they get a new car, they swap them over! We keep the plate with the car and get new plates if we get a new car.

    7. What are you looking forward to this month?
A return to some normalcy; cooler weather; my new stove so that I can bake again

Bonus question! Can you get packages delivered to your front door? If not, where do you went them?
Yes! We're very fortunate that mail and packages come right to our front door.

    1. I enjoyed The Call of the Midwife! It's been a while since I watched it; is there a new season? I sometimes would tell myself when riding my bike last year, "gentle pushes! That's a good girl!" Hahaha!

  7. My packages come directly to my door! Sometimes, they may be dropped off at the mailbox - we have bigger mailboxes for larger packages. The mail person will leave a key in my mailbox and that key will open the bigger mailbox for the package.

    1. Feeling Every Bit of My 37 Years
    2. All about trigger fingers and the trapezius muscle! (LOL, so fun)
    3. Still hot. And rainy.
    4. Book club and a surprise party for my friend!
    5. Best thing I read was Why We Sleep and the best thing I watched was Survivor 49
    6. I got peed on at the dog park! This is why you don't sit on the ground at the dog park!

    1. OMG re being peed on!! I can't say that it's something that's happened to me, unless you count myself peeing on my own foot on accident when in the woods! PS shouldn't you not sit on the ground anyway, I mean, pee and poo particles abound!

    4. What event last month was your favorite?
    A. Getting my Peloton bike. I really love it!
    5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month?
    A. Not a good listening month. I slogged through The Windsor Knot by SJ Bennett. I tried listening to How to Solve Your Won Murder by Kristen Perrin, and I just can't.
    6. Tell us one funny recent story.
    A. My niece had a birthday party and my job was to get a bouquet of flowers. Our small-town grocery store always has flowers. But not that day. They had ZERO flowers! I circled the store three times, sweating and in shock, before settling on a variety of tiny pumpkins. I placed them in the center of the table and everyone laughed so hard. Luckily, my niece loved them!

    1. Oh no!! Sorry, I've been under a rock, but I am assuming the diabetes and changes are you?? If so, boo I am so sorry!

So glad that you found an alternative to the flowers! I hate it when you have to pivot like that sometimes, but it sounds like you did good!

  9. You had an amazing month. It sounds like a jackpot of happy memories.
My month was very busy. It feels like they all are.
I celebrated two family birthdays and went to a concert which was nice.
Books were okayish. I think it's me not being able to focus much these days.
Weather is fall like. Cold, dark rainy. It is ok.

  10. No skipping, prancing, or whistling a happy tune around here! September is our very worst month, weather-wise. I'm very happy to move on to October- it's still hot, steamy, and soggy, but there's a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel.
I guess I've never really appreciated the fact that we get packages delivered right to our door. But I will from now on! September was an okay reading month for me- my volume dropped from the summer months which was kind of a bummer, but that's what happens when school starts.
What did I learn in September?... Hmm. I have to start learning more, I guess. I can't think of anything.
