Today I had one of those "oh s**t" moments, where I thought that the Boston Marathon was next weekend and I was worried that I hadn't even picked out my throwaway sweatshirt yet. I also haven't ordered another pouch for my running belt (my current one is falling apart). I thought, "darn it, now I am going to have to pay for two day shipping on Amazon".
Then I realized, not only is the marathon not next weekend, it's not even the weekend after that OR the one after that. It's three weeks and three days away. Cue the panic.
I like to plan ahead. I lay out all my clothes and things a week beforehand and check them off my list (literally). Then I check to make sure I did not miss anything on the list. Then I check my bag again. I have found that this saves me running around at the last minute wondering what I have forgotten. It also saves me forgetting things like my toothbrush or my contacts. I hate feeling unprepared. I hate it. I feel a lot better when I have a nice tidy list and everything is all checked off.
However, I have this feeling that I am forgetting something, that I will forget something, or that I haven't trained enough (cue the laughter from all my non running work friends who think I am crazy when I run 6 miles even!). I know, its the taper madness, but really? I am not even done with my high mileage week yet! However, this week does mark the end of the high mileage. This week is my highest yet, and then comes the dreaded taper.
What will I do with myself when I am not running for severaldozen hours a week? Maybe I will take up the harp, or actually read a book this month. Probably I will spend more time at the gym, and by the time taper is over, my arms will look like this. You know, since I am supposed to be resting my legs.

Is anyone you know running the Boston Marathon? Are you running the Boston Marathon?
When you are leaving for a trip, do you pack beforehand? Have you ever felt like you are unprepared for something even when you were actually ready?

I know a couple people running in Boston, I can't wait to see how the weather is this year for everyone, it has to better! I had to laugh a little at your panic, you might be a little scary if you got arms like that, but no one would mess with you!
ReplyDeleteSo excited for you re: Boston, and can't wait to hear how it goes! I'm sure you'll be super prepared :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you still have a few weeks to mentally and physically prep! For a trip like that, I would typically start packing 3-4 days early, but overall I am a night before packer and I ALWAYS overpack
ReplyDeletehaha, yea you still have time. Get yo shit together lady! <3
ReplyDeleteI panic like that too when scurrying around to pack up. I'm glad you still have time! Wish I could be there to cheer you on!!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited for you! Obviously I haven't prepared for a marathon, but I do know that feeling of panic from thinking something important is this week, when you really still have some time.
ReplyDeleteHaaa! You will be fine! But yes I panic all the time... Especially for triathlons cause of all the gear. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am a total, last-minute packer. Usually that means I forget something, but my philosophy is that there are always stores nearby. And with the Boston expo..you're covered if you do forget something!
ReplyDeleteThe biggest thing I hate about travel is packing. I get in a zone and even Sweets has learned to steer clear of me when I'm packing. I am constantly running through a mental checklist of what I need and if someone talks to me, I'm likely to forget where I am in that list (which makes me REALLY grumpy). It's even worse now that we also have to pack for Gavin. Which reminds me, we're heading to Boston next week (we'll be sure to groom the marathon trail in Wellesley for you) and I need to start organizing things for our trip this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI hate packing so I wait until the very last second! Terrible and I always forget something :( I should really learn from my past.
ReplyDeleteYes to both questions! Taper madness gets us every time! I imagine for Boston it's 100s times more so!
ReplyDeleteOh, taper madness is such a doozy. I don't mind packing, but I'm not consistent about when I do it for my trips. Sometimes it is a day or two ahead of time and sometimes it is an hour before I need to leave for the airport. I do usually try to make a list, though, that way I don't forget things like my toothbrush or deodorant or underwear.
ReplyDeleteFor work trips, I pack the night before mostly because I have such a routine down for what to bring. For fun trips or longer trips, I start a list a week in advance. It helps me feel prepared and it helps to have a plan for what I will wear so that I don't wear those items before my trip. I have had trips where I have forgotten things, though. Like I forgot a suit jacket last fall (but I had bronchitis at the time so my head was not all there). And I forgot a cardigan 2 trips ago but I walked to Target and bought one so that wasn't a big deal.
ReplyDeleteI totally have those panic attacks but not about boston, maybe when I am 80! haha. You are one of the only people I know going this year but I am super duper excited to hear about it!
