For example, Nance brought up that the Ohio flag was the only one shaped like a pennant and apparently is a bitch to fold (like fitted sheets, she said). I remember having to fold the US flag for my Mom, who was a postmaster, and you would be in some deep doodoo if it touched the floor, because then we were supposed to burn it. But it had to be in perfect triangles, like a folded note from high school. Are you old enough to remember passing notes in HS, and folding them like a US flag? If so, big hug to you!
Nance also said (sorry to out you Nance!) that the Ohio State flag would be improved if a nipple was added, which Birchie had talked about as a controversy to the Virginia flag (which I never had heard about. Side note, who remembers the Janet Jackson half time incident!??) I mean, wouldn't every flag be enhanced by adding a nipple? On the CA flag, it would be on the bear, I imagine, as a random floating nipple would just be weird. I did go and look at the Virginia flag and I see no issue with the nipple, I feel that it is quite tasteful. Of course, it is also quite tasteful on the bear.

Made by Gemini; not the real CA flag😁 |
MG talked about the Montana flag and how there are words in Spanish on it, and she wondered why. I am guessing that since the state name itself is a Spanish word, that may have something to do with it? Without Google, that is my guess. Can anyone name all of the states in the US that are Spanish words?? Ready? GO!
Engie mentioned a dude with a podcast about flags whose name is Roman Mars and I need to know: is that really his real name?! Actually, did you know that you can tell the difference between Greek gods and Roman ones because the Roman ones all have planet names!? So Neptune = Roman and Poseidon = Greek. I just learned that, despite my Mom being a fan of Greek mythology. So maybe I learned it a long time ago and the forgot it and am now relearning it? Who knows. The joys of forgetting. You forget that you forgot and then you get to "learn something new" again, over and over!

In other random news, I spent some time in some of the smaller towns in Türkiye and it once again reminded me of why I like going to one place or country for a longer time rather than trying to jam pack in a bunch of different places into one trip. Getting out of the big main cities and away from the main tourist attractions really does give you a different take on the same place. I am not saying that if you ever go to Türkiye, you should skip Istanbul or Cappadocia, but try some of the smaller towns on the turquoise coast, or maybe the Eastern part of the country and you'll see a different side than you normally would. I think I may have to do an entire post on this, as also even the touristy places have hidden sides. Cappadocia is not just about the balloons!!

...and the sun beat down upon my head... |
Speaking of Cappadocia, long story short, I didn't wear a hat and it was sunny and went for a treeless hike and I burned the part on my hair. I am very good at applying sunscreen and I did do it but normally I wear a hat and so the lily white top of my head is protected. In this case, it wasn't and I am like a kid with lice (does your head itch now?) and I can't stop fidgeting with the dry skin!
Speaking of lice, I am contemplating doing some hiking in Scotland but I hate midges and they are pretty much a staple in the summer. I think that the way my schedule is going to work out, summer would be when I am there but I am trying to figure out how to be midge free. Have you ever experienced midges? Do you have any anti-midge tricks?
Speaking of summer, I am having a first world problem where I try to decide what to do but I have a list about a mile long and many of the items are outdoor and the summer is only so long! I want to do them all but...see above where I talk about how I like soaking in one destination or place for a while. I am torn. My life is so hard! Do you ever have trouble narrowing down where to go when you travel?
Speaking of life being hard, I have had a lot of questions about how other people abroad treat me when they learn about where I am from. I will say that I have had no issues, and in the last day alone, I have had to show my passport a few times, so people know where I am from! Some people have joked that they shouldn't be talking to me (British guy) or that they were going to put an extra charge on a tour (Turkish guy) but I have had no real ill will towards me. I had an interesting conversation with a Russian woman about our respective leaders though! That was fun!
Okay, your turn! Here are all of the questions; feel free to answer any or all!
Are you old enough to remember passing notes in HS, and folding them like a US flag?
Do you remember the Janet Jackson half time incident!??
Would every flag be enhanced by adding a nipple?
Can you name all of the states in the US that are Spanish words?
Did you know that all of the Roman Gods have planet names!?
Have you ever experienced midges?
Do you have any anti-midge tricks?
Do you ever have trouble narrowing down where to go when you travel?
Are you old enough to remember passing notes in HS, and folding them like a US flag?
ReplyDeleteI'm old enough to remember stuff way older than that (like dial phones and party lines and card catalogs), so yes. Sigh.
Do you remember the Janet Jackson half time incident!??
Yes, I do, and I always thought it was planned because of the way their faces looked. What a big deal out of nothing, really.
Would every flag be enhanced by adding a nipple?
Oh, sure! Especially if it replaces a star, like Texas's.
Can you name all of the states in the US that are Spanish words?
No, and I don't want to, really.
Did you know that all of the Roman Gods have planet names!?
I think I did because I used to have to teach Roman mythology.
Have you ever experienced midges?
Oh god yes! I lived on the shores of Lake Erie for ages. Just google the 5 Oct 2007 ALDS game that the midges swarmed the Yankee pitcher and made them lose the playoffs. There's video. Lake Erie midges are no joke.
Do you have any anti-midge tricks?
Don't open your mouth, period.
Haha! Hey! I remember dial phones and card catalogs! My Dad had a party line, but luckily that was gone by the time I was born! So if you put a nipple on the TX flag, does that mean the song has to be, "the nipples at night, are big and bright***deep in the heart of Texas!!!" Your midge trick is good, but it will not keep them from touching or eating my face.
DeleteI also love reading blog comments. They're so much fun!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, that probably is why Montana's flag has Spanish words on it! (*smacks hand on forehead*)
Are you old enough to remember passing notes in HS, and folding them like a US flag? Maybe I'm too old - this wasn't something we did in HS.
Do you remember the Janet Jackson half time incident!?? I remember hearing about it but I didn't see it.
Would every flag be enhanced by adding a nipple? Well, of course!
Can you name all of the states in the US that are Spanish words? Ummmm. Montana! Colorado, Nevada. I'd have to look it up to know for sure.
Did you know that all of the Roman Gods have planet names!? I did not.
Have you ever experienced midges? No, thank goodness!
Do you have any anti-midge tricks? Sorry, I don't.
Do you ever have trouble narrowing down where to go when you travel? Yes. I have trouble even when I'm not traveling!
Reading blog comments is like trying to find a show on Netflix. I turn on the TV, and start looking for something to watch and before I know it 30 mins has passed and I have only just read a bunch of descriptions and still haven't chosen. Sometimes I forget to comment on the blog post because I spent so much time reading the comments that I forget that I have not commented yet! Ha! In the 90s it was very common to write a note to a friend but then you had to fold it up all special, like in the shape of a origami swan, a "football" or a triangle where you fit the ends into the triangle, so it was all tucked up together. It was loads of fun and we spent a lot of time figuring out how to do it! Time well spent, I say!
DeleteI also never saw the JJ nipple incident, but I heard a lot about it! And if you never experience midges, count yourself lucky! Although I think I was somewhere in MT (?) where there were biting flies, which were not fun at all! I hate biting bugs. My idea of torture would be to be put in a box with a bunch of biting/stinging bugs. I don't mind the pain but the itch and having the bugs touching me over and over would annoy the crap out of me.
I remember people folding notes but I was not a note passer in school for fear of being caught! I was a goodie two shoes.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of midges! But I have figured out they must be some sort of fly or flea type of thing? We do not have them in Minnesota!
It can be hard for me to decide where we should go, but it’s easier now that we have kids and don’t travel much. But pre-kids I could hem and haw about a destination before making a decision. Except I had a stretch where I only went to Paris which I do not regret!
Yes, if you just pick one place and keep going to it that definitely makes it easier! Plus you don't have to figure out what to do (as much) while you are there because you are familiar. That is nice when that happens for sure. I feel that way about Paris, or going to Oregon; it is less pressure! You may not have heard of midges, but in CA we call a very similar bug a no-seeum. They are tiny and they can just be very annoying and swarmy, OR they can bite, which is the worse of the two, although having a lot of bugs in your face, eyes etc. is also not that great. Consider yourself lucky if you never have to experience that.
DeleteRob and Jake are doing a father-son trip to Scotland this summer, they are hiking the Highland Trail, and so the topic of midges has come up recently. I think there are repellents that you can buy to spray on your skin and clothes that help.
ReplyDeleteI do remember the Janet Jackson nipple episode and I would like to get on my soapbox to rail against the patriarchy that essentially ruined her career while lifting up JT's. It makes me absolutely furious.
The Highland Trail! Nice! I am considering the National Trail, the Cape Wrath Trail, the Skye Trail and of course I still have not decided! Argh. I like wilder places; however, feel like having the option to stay in or go through towns might be nice too. I am full of indecision Nicole! Going to check out the Highland Trail now... :)
DeleteTo tell the truth, the flag post was just me going off on a tangent when I read about Virginia's Nipplegate. After I finished it, a little voice in my head told me the post was weak sauce, and I came very close to deleting it. But oh the comments were gold!
ReplyDeleteLet's do this!
Are you old enough to remember passing notes in HS, and folding them like a US flag? - I passed notes in HS, but never folded them in any particularly cleaver way.
Do you remember the Janet Jackson half time incident!?? Yep!
Would every flag be enhanced by adding a nipple? Duh! I will admit to looking for teats on the bear on the CA flag, and Nance's comment makes me see the big O on the Ohio flag as a breast.
Can you name all of the states in the US that are Spanish words? Ooh! My next obsession!
Did you know that all of the Roman Gods have planet names!? Nope.
Have you ever experienced midges? Maybe? I don't remember.
Do you have any anti-midge tricks? Nope.
Do you ever have trouble narrowing down where to go when you travel? Sometimes! This year I had the big goals of going to CA (complete), BC, and NS, but everything else is pretty much up in the air and I'm squeezing things in as I can get to them. THERE ARE SO MANY PLACES TO GO and most of my travel is just road trips within a few hours of home.
I love road trips! I haven't had a good road trip in a while! Of course, maybe the bike trip was a "road trip?" I don't know. Anyway, I do think a long car ride/camping situation will be in my future. Also I have some thoughts about train trips which I will post at some point. PS If you had experienced midges, or no-seeums, you would know. Lots of tiny swarming bugs in your nose and eyes and on your face.
DeleteI do remember note passing. I remember rotary phones too, and I have two toy phones in my daycare and it dawns on me that the tots in my daycare don’t recognize the toy phones as phones because they’ve never seen a rotary phone. I also remember the wardrobe scandal with the malfunction- I believe it was staged.
ReplyDeleteWe had rotary phones and I remember when you would mess up and have to start over! What a pain. I was so glad to get the button one, and man oh man, when we got call waiting it was like Christmas and a birthday at the same time! Awesome. Now we look back at that as so archaic!
DeleteHello! I'm not sure that I've ever encountered a midge, but I live and hike in the northeast where there are mosquitoes and black flies throughout the mountains, and they're especially swarmy in the late spring/early summer. Wearing a head net and pre-treating clothing with permethrin spray are my two pieces of advice. :)
ReplyDeleteOh I hate black flies too! When I was cycling, I had a lot of flies in the MI, Ontario area. Also a lot of mosquitoes, which are also not my favorite, but I don't get large welts, so they are more annoying than anything. I do have a head net and have found the best lotion is by Sawyer and is picaridin, and then I do treat my clothing with permethrin as well! Hopefully that will be enough!
DeleteBlog comments are so cool.
ReplyDeleteI remember that is how I used to find new blogs. It was a rabbit hole. Once you start a whole ne world opens up.
Today I am not spending as much time in the comment section – not because I don't want to. It's more a time issue.
Yes midgets. It's not a novelty in Germany. As for anti midget things... no idea. But my parents and sister went to Scotland in the summer my sister is very sensitive and it was on terrible things he keeps talking about.
Death my going crazy from midges...I think it is a thing! I used to get into that rabbit hole too and I don't as much now. I am barely commenting! When I am out of service (which I have been) and I get back in service, it is often kind of overwhelming to read, comment, respond etc. when there are a lot of posts!
DeleteI don't have answers for most of your questions, but, absolutely- every state flag should have a nipple. Ha, that is so funny- Birchie's original post, the comments, and now your comments on the comments, Who knew state flags could be so much fun?
ReplyDeleteI don't have experience with midges- I guess they're not a Florida thing- but my sister has. As a matter of fact, they've ruined several summers for her where she felt like she couldn't go outside in her own backyard. I can't remember if she found a solution- if she did, I'll pass it on to you.
I would love to hear it!! We have no-seeums in California and they are similar but midges are nasty and swarm in huge packs of tiny bugs into your orifices. Yuck.
DeleteRoman Mars is his name, but I don't know if it's a stage name. His wikipedia entry doesn't say. His voice is DIVINE. I have literally listened to him talk about the design of a basketball hoop and found it riveting.
ReplyDeleteWell it's a great name. Now I will have to listen to that podcast! I feel like Morgan Freeman and David Attenborough have those nice voices too, or maybe I am just conditioned by the BBC or Discovery.
DeleteYour california flag is amazing! Much better than the real one.
ReplyDeleteI sunburned the same place IN TURKEY before. It did make me appear very lice-y
I really feel your summer conundrum. I have no midge advice and all the stuff I read about never did anything for me. I just avoid Scotland in august haha.
Summer lists are harder in the UK because even though we get summer it sometimes rains for much of a whole month and then I get mad, so I just try and do all the summer on the first warm day no matter what that day is. Apropo of that... I have taken a lot of annual leave in this sunny May
I don't feel I was or am ever treated differently abroad for being American... I think if anyone did judge from where I am from that's more a reflection on them. I remember an Australian once said "you Americans were awful to the natives" which I kind of eye rolled because... Australia?
Ha! That comment from the Australian is cheeky. And I am not condoning the way that the natives were (or are) treated at all, but I feel like a lot of people came from many places (but mostly Europe) and went to new lands and mistreated the natives, and then settled there, so oftentimes it started with the Europeans being awful. Anywho... I have had a couple of side comments (jokes?) but for the most part 99.5% of the time everyone is super nice and not judgy at all.
DeleteI think midges are like our sand flies, but I haven’t had a run-in with them. My dad has had some terrible encounters and been covered in bites. Apparently they are really bad the last day of the Milford Sound walk. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of biting insects and flies during our time in Wales. In Brecon we even had our windows open all night in our accomodation right next to the canal. I can only suggest having very light full length clothing coupled with a DEET repellent.
ReplyDeleteI do have trouble narrowing down places when I travel, but I do my best because you do get more of a feel for a place when you stay a bit longer.
You are lucky! I think August is the worst time and also don't quote me, but probably they are worse in the more boggy areas (?) I hated the biting (horse?) flies when I was in Australia; they could take a huge chunk out of you and I think (?) they were especially bad on the east coast. However, I can't remember sand flies, but it has been a while so maybe I blocked that out!
DeleteI’ve never heard of midges, but Kyria says we have them, so I wonder if they are the little swarming bugs that I sometimes see on a morning walk…that was one benefit of COVID, I took my mask on my walks, and could pull it up to cover half of my face.
ReplyDeleteNipples on flags! YES! ALL HUMANS/Mammals HAVE NIPPLES, so let’s do this! I love your mock up of the CA flag. I intended to discuss our flag with Birchie when she was here and I forgot. Damn.
I dream of spending a month in Paris and just learning all of the little side things and so on. We went to the far west coast of Brittany in 2018, which is much less touristy, and loved it. Very laid back.
We have noseeums in CA, but usually they don't bite; they just swarm in your orifices and are annoying. However, some of them do bite, but you can barely see them and so how can you attack when you can't see them!? It is annoying.
DeleteI spent a month in Paris and it was great. I also did not have a lot of money at the time, so I spent a LOT of time just walking around, or I would nurse one coffee for hours in a cafe! Luckily the French don't care if you sit there all day, so I often would! It was wonderful.
I am desperately trying not to be insanely jealous of you and our other traveling bloggers... I am muttering "travel vicariously" under my breath. ;) I just wanted to say THANK YOU for continuing to share your adventures with the rest of us. I may never make it to Turkiye, but now I've at least seen/learned about it through the photos and words of a, well, regular person (i.e., not a travel writer).
ReplyDeleteThere is an interesting article in the NY Times - well, the headline is interesting, I haven't quite made it to *reading* said article - about whether travel writers should share or gatekeep. I suspect that the reason for the article is that most of the comments on any given travel article in the Times fuss at them for sharing about hidden or less-well-known destinations. I'd love to know your thoughts on that. And let me know if you want me to send you the gift link, ok?
Oooh that is a great question. I want to say gatekeep. People should get out there and find their own things, not just follow some internet herd from place to place. I personally like to be in places that are more off the beaten track, but with the internet, it is harder to find these sometimes. Once the herds find things, they get overrun, overpriced and sometimes just like being at home! (I feel the same way about the mountains and small mountain towns. Once the city people find it, they bring their city vibes to the small towns and then they are just not the same!) I know I am not blameless either, but I do wish some things could remain sacred.
