Happy Monday! I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer and is getting plenty of time outside in the sunshine! As you are reading this, Cristof and I have just completed Segment One in Montana and are celebrating with ice cream, beer and a well deserved swim! In case you have not been following along, this means we are done!
And as you often ask after a journey like this, what's next? I will be staying in the US for a couple of months, doing some hiking, road tripping and housesitting before setting off for another international destination. More on this later!
I'd love to hear what you're up to! Please copy and paste the questions at the end and add your answers to the mix!
Where was I? Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana
What country related books or documentaries did I watch?
Read: finally finished On The Plain of Snakes by Paul Theroux (Mexico)
*Also read these, not related to this year's travel plans, but good all the same!
The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See (China)
First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung (Cambodia)
Watched: The Real Story of the Sunshine Mine Disaster which is about an incident in the 70s at the Sunshine mine near Kellogg, Idaho, when a mine fire filled the tunnels with deadly carbon monoxide. Ninety-one miners lost their lives, making it one of the worst mining disasters in U.S. history and leading to major improvements in mine safety and emergency equipment.
Did I complete any other items on this year's looking forward list?
✅New food <-- Fry Sauce (apparently a UT special, made from mixing mayo, ketchup and a few other spices etc. I love mayo, so of course I was a fan!)
✅ Book about country <-- On the Plain of Snakes (Mexico)
✅ New thing <-- Saw ospreys and a muskrat in the wild
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. What is the name of last month's chapter?
January: Devouring the Sweet Potato
February: Back in the Groove
March: Serenity Before the Storm
April: Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot
May: The Ring of Fire and Ice
June: On The Road Again
July: A River Rides Through It
I rode along many creeks and rivers in July, thank goodness. It was a welcome relief from the dry, hot plains and deserts I had been near before!
2. What did I learn last month?
I learned about fry sauce, what the difference is between an osprey and an eagle, the difference between the screech of a hawk and a falcon, and that a muskrat is MUCH smaller than a beaver (PS beavers are huge).
I also learned (noticed?) that people in ID and UT don't fly their state flag as much as people in AZ do (or it is not as obvious?) and that the ID state flag has the state seal on it, and this seal is notable for being the only U.S. state seal designed by a woman. The UT flag and highway signs all have a beehive on them, which is a symbol of hard work, cooperation, and perseverance, specifically due to the early settlers, who were part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I also learned (just now, when I was going to use the acronym "LDS") that church leadership asks people to avoid using "LDS" or the nickname "Mormon" as a substitute for the name of the Church. Preferred terms if a shortened name is used, are "the Church" or "the Church of Jesus Christ."
3. What was the weather like?
It was great! Sure, sometimes it was hot, in the 90s or even above 100 a few times, but for the most part, nights were in the 40s and 50s and daytime temperatures were in the 80s. The only issue really was the smoke, and it was heavy (and really smelly) at times!

4. What event last month was my favorite?
Again, it really is too hard to decide. I am going to do a post later with a wrap up of the bike trip, including some favorites, so for now I will say that the animals I saw were a highlight! Here are some interesting additions from July.
🌟Water animals, including a muskrat, a river otter and one dead weasel/ferret.
🌟A plethora of birds, including three baby ospreys in a nest (It was huge! I thought it was an eagle's nest at first), two juvenile (and curious) owls, pelicans, sand hill cranes, many waterfowl and various flitting and flapping and chirping other birds that I cannot name. Oh and many hawks, who screamed and screeched above my head as I was riding.
🌟So many hooved animals, including deer and elk, tons of Bambis, many MANY cows, horses, goats, pigs, buffalo and llamas.
🌟Randoms such as bunnies, snakes (mostly dead, only two rattlers), butterflies, and bees.
Note: I did not see any bears; nor did I see any prints or scat. I am not sure why not!
5. What was the best thing read, listened to or watched last month?
Book: The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett. Set in 1933, this is the story of a little girl in a Mississippi orphanage, the vice squad, who at the time was trying to get rid of all illegal activities, such as gambling, drinking and prostitution, a childless "old maid" named Birdie and her social climbing sister, and many other intriguing characters, who are all tangled together in some interesting ways.
Movie/Show: I haven't really watched TV at all, but I do have a few Jim Gaffigan standup bits saved on my YT for nights when I need a pick me up. I especially like this one where he roasts Canada (while, of course, performing in Canada). If you like it, there is a full length version.
Podcast: This episode of Lives Less Ordinary, which made me cry a little while riding my bike, about a family getting lost at sea while trying to escape from Vietnam by boat after the Vietnam War.
6. Tell us one funny recent story.
I finally finished the bike route, and took myself for a second breakfast to celebrate. [Quick backstory: I probably burn between 3,000 - 5,000 calories per day most days. I generally eat breakfast around 6:00 am and by 9:00 am I am already hungry again]. I walked into the local breakfast joint around 10:00 am and there was a large table of older gents (Montana rancher and cowboy types) all eating and chatting.

When I am hungry, I want it all, and can never decide between sweet and savory, so I ordered biscuits and gravy (with eggs and hash browns) and a side of pancake. When it came out it was a lot of food, but I knew I could do it. Not one, but several of the cowboys commented, saying things like, "are you expecting someone else?" and "there's no way you will finish all that!" and "don't worry; they have to go containers." Um, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, gents! So I ate it. All of it. By the time I was finished they were gone, but I told the server to make sure she let them know the next time they were in that I DID IT.
What? I am a Taurus, people. Plus, seriously, I really was hungry!

JULY:
1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that?
2. What did you learn last month?
3. What was the weather like where you are?
4. What event last month was your favorite?
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month?
6. Tell us one funny recent story.
AUGUST:
7. What are you looking forward to this month?
Bonus question! What is the weirdest animal you have seen in the wild? Have you every had Fry Sauce?

I've noticed a huge variation in state flag flying. California, Kentucky, Maryland, and Virginia stand out in memory as places that really shout out their flags, but last week the only reason that I saw the Illinois and Iowa state flags is that I really looked for them. Some of these states need to take a lesson from Minnesota: if your flag is boring, then it's time to change it.
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo, here are my stats for July:
Title: Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (inspired by the smoky weekend from the wildfires).
Learned: related to your fry sauce adventures, the standard for fries in Iowa is ranch. I approve.
Weather: soooo hot, soooo smoky. But we had a few days of nice weather as well.
Favorite events: the jigsaw puzzle party at my house, my IL/IA road trip.
Read: overall it was a meh reading month, with the exception of A Hymn to Life by Gisele Pelicot. It's a must read. Actually it's a must listen because Emma Thompson did the audiobook, so I don't know why anyone would chose the print version. Best watch was season two of Beef.
Funny: I'm drawing a blank, but the most unusual event of the month was that a toad camped out in the tracks of my sliding door for about a week.
Looking forward to next month: MEGA ROAD TRIP!!!!!
Jigsaw puzzle party sounds fun! I love games and puzzles and getting together to do that sounds like a fun way to be social to me! The smoke was horrible, wasn't it? Did it reach you all the way in OH or was it worse when you were in IA?
DeleteAnd dude, ranch is The Way to dip for sure! I also approve.
First of all, I am SO jealous of your upcoming road trip.
ReplyDelete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? Readjusting to Life in Canada
2. What did you learn last month? That five nights without two kids at home is just enough time for me to feel rested and then I need another five nights to just fully relax into the peace and quiet. Also, the house stays SO clean when the kids are away. I love them, but my goodness life is so different when it's just two adults in the house.
3. What was the weather like where you are? Hot and sunny most of the time.
4. What event last month was your favorite? The week without kids home (especially a delicious steak dinner with my husband), followed by time spent at the lake visiting my parents with my son. He's so easy one-on-one and we fished and read books and played badminton. It was exhausting in some ways, but also really sweet.
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? I really liked the book Good People. It was a very though-provoking read. (Stay tuned for my recap later this week on the blog.)
AUGUST:
7. What are you looking forward to this month? Getting through it?? I am so looking forward to getting back to routine. The kids will have been off school for SIX MONTHS.
SIX MONTHS? I bet you are really looking forward to having the kids back in school! That's a long time to be together so much. It's nice that you and and the hubby got some alone time though. I bet that was great, and steak sounds good too!
DeleteI have not read the Good Life but will check it out for sure!
That was an epic ride, Kyria! Darn about all the smoke though. We were pretty lucky during July, with a few mildly smoky days, but today it really rolled in.
ReplyDelete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that? A visitor from Japan!
2. What did you learn last month? I took the AARP driver's safety test so I can get a discount on insurance, and I must have learned something during the 4 excruciating hours.
3. What was the weather like where you are? It was unbearably hot. I don't do well with heat.
4. What event last month was your favorite? Riding the gondola to the top of Lone Mountain in Big Sky. It was delightfully cold up there!
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? I listened to By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and it was wonderful.
6. Tell us one funny recent story. I can't think of one...my mind is blank!
What am I looking forward to in August? Meeting some cool bloggers!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was in Glacier yesterday and I could barely see my hand in front of my face! It's so bad! It seems better today so I hope you will also be better tomorrow! I've never been to Big Sky but I've heard great things! I am sure that was amazing! Meeting cool bloggers sounds exciting! I can't think of anything more fun!
DeleteWow Kyria, this is so so so so COOL!!! That is yet another part of the country I'm not familiar with, and I'm sure it was incredibly beautiful. Another epic adventure for you!
ReplyDeleteMy July was all about THE WEDDING!!! It was such a joyful event, and I'm still coming down off that high. It's been a little hard to get back to normal life, but in August I'm looking forward to football starting up again, and- well, I have mixed feelings about this but school starts next week! I'm not sure I'm ready for the early mornings again, but I am looking forward to having the house to myself again on my days off.
Looking forward to your next adventures!!!
JULY:
ReplyDelete1. What is the name of your last month's chapter or the theme of your last month if you prefer that?
July: shop till you drop and write till the fam needs you (we did a lot of shopping for college gear, clothes for the 2 youngest, fancy wedding attire, and I stuck to my guns and kicked people out of the study when I was writing)
2. What did you learn last month?
I learned a lot about the Ku Klux Klan. I'm reading a book for book club that I never would've picked up. It's chock full of info and I had no idea how widespread it was and that it targeted Jewish and Catholic people and immigrants in addition to African Americans. Hard to fathom all that hatred.
3. What was the weather like where you are? Mostly hot - with some freakishly bad storms mixed in. Lots of downed trees and power outages where we live.
4. What event last month was your favorite? Probably my annual getaway to Wisconsin with Mini and Curly. One night away, just us. Shopping, eating out, hanging at the resort pool, watching a movie, and of course so much laughing.
5. What was the best thing you read, listened to or watched last month? Mini and I listened to a few SmartLess podcasts - the ones with the actors who are in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. We are enjoying the show (started this summer) and we got a kick out of their interviews.
6. Tell us one funny recent story. We had all 8 kids come home for dinner last night - last family time before we drive Curly to college. We played volleyball and Ed hit the ball, and then tripped over one of the ropes holding the net up. The entire net came down. We play fam v-ball all the time and that's never happened. It was a hoot. Oh, Tank shared a funny thing he is doing for a work presentation, and I so love seeing them insert their personalities into their jobs and letting people see who they are.
AUGUST:
7. What are you looking forward to this month? Mini and I are supposed to fly to NYC for the weekend end of August. My best friend from HS lives there, so I'm excited to see him (my other dear friend who lives there won't be in town when we go, so I'm pondering what to do with the rest of my free time. I pictured hanging out with the moms who I know who frequent the Jersey Shore, but that's not exactly easy to get to from NYC esp if I only have one day to kill, so I'm conflicted about whether to go on the trip, or skip it)
Bonus question! What is the weirdest animal you have seen in the wild? Have you every had Fry Sauce?
Sorry, I failed to scroll down and see the bonus question: I've never heard of Fry Sauce. the weirdest animal I've seen in the wild is prob the 3 legged raccoon that crawled out from under our deck during a party at our old house. The coolest animal I've seen in the wild - huh, so many. Prob the infant moose - cord still attached while we were in Glacier. The mama moose was fairly impressive too. We saw so many bears. Awesome.
DeleteIn Minnesota, flying our new (and pretty!) state flag is a tell. It means you are a moderate or a Democrat or you are against ICE. Republicans HATE our flag and there are all sorts of conspiracy theories about it, even though the flag committee was bipartisan. It is RIDICULOUS. But after what happened this winter with ICE essentially occupying Minnesota, it became a way to show you weren’t down with what is happening. We don’t have a flagpole, otherwise I would get a Mn state flag. But I don’t want to install one on our house or ask Phil to. But I’m flying our flag in my heart.
ReplyDeleteJuly was a long month. The 4th feels like a year ago. But it also went by quickly at the same time? I only traveled once (to Chicago) but I got sick on that trip so it wasn’t great.
In August I’m looking forward to hosting you and going to the lake for our annual August vacation!!
Whoa, those are a lot of fires to work around. How bad were the conditions for you?
ReplyDelete1. Big Celebrations and Insurance Woes
2. I'm learning a lot about ADHD and executive functioning, as I try to figure out a better task management system for the way my brain works.
3. We finally got some rain! A lot of rain, yay!
4. Spending the day with my mom on her birthday!
5. Best thing I read was Empire of Pain, best thing I watched was Big Brother, and best thing I listened to was Olivia Rodrigo's new album
6. I bought this cart for my office that needs to be assembled. It has three baskets so I put the baskets on the floor of my office and KNEW one of my cats would find it to be a lovely resting spot. Sure enough, 30 minutes later, Lila was snoozing in a basket!
7. I don't really have anything that exciting happening in August, womp. Hopefully, I can fully taper off my steroids, though! That would be great.
