Be My Guest

For those of you who don't know, I used to do a lot of photography. Of course, this was back when camera phones were not really a thing. Now I still do a lot, but so does everyone else! And what do we all do with all of these photos? Well, except for the few AI things I have been playing around with for fun, all photos on this blog are taken by yours truly!

I am excited to say that yesterday I was featured on the Viewfinder website! You can find my post here! Please go and check it out and come back and let me know what you think!

Lest you think I am using this as a cop out for posting today, I will leave you with the following five places I would go back to, in photo form. These are in no particular order, and are "including but not limited to!"

Patagonia

Maine

Croatia

South Africa

Nepal

Have you been to any of the places I have mentioned? Do you like taking photographs? What places that you have been to would you return to?

If you haven't already, you can fill out this form with any questions you want answered for my upcoming ask me anything post!!

This post is part of NaBloPoMo. You can find the rest of my posts for this challenge here. You can find the list of participants and their information here

  1. Thanks for the eye candy!

    - I haven't been to any of these places! But I bet you can guess which one I want to go to - Maine!
    - Yes I love taking photos! I got an SLR way back when. Now mind you, only one in 10,000 pictures that I take is memorable, but it's worth it to get that one shot. I go back and forth on when I'm willing to tote the SLR around and when my phone will do just fine. There is no "right" answer - in most cases my phone IS just fine, but for that 1/10,000 shot, it's the SLR all the way.
    - My #1 love of the places that I've been is the Lake Erie islands.

    1. Maine has a lot of lighthouses, so I am sure you would love it. Plus they have lots of coastline, which is beautiful. I spent some time in Portland and down, but always wanted to go to Bar Harbor. I was going to go on this trip and take the ferry from there to NS, but it shut down in October, so...I guess I have to go back!

I also wanted to go to the Lake Erie islands and was going to ride there and take the ferry across to OH, but then once again, time got the best of me. However, I enjoyed Buffalo, but definitely need to get to OH at some point too!

  2. I haven't been to any of these places but would love to get to Croatia, Maine and Patagonia. Maine is the easiest to get to, of course. I do like to take photos but wouldn't say that I'm good at it necessarily?

    1. Croatia is so pretty and the walled cities are very cool. Plus it is mostly warm! Also if you go there, Albania, Montenegro and Slovenia are all nearby and also beautiful! I think most people take a lot of photos but many of them are probably not good at it, but luckily the phone cameras now are so good that they make you look good!

    1. Thanks Berreaux! It was fun to put together, especially now as I have already forgotten about some of the earlier places a little! :)

  4. The photos on the Viewfinder site are breathtaking. Absolutely gorgeous.
I haven't been to any of the places you feature here, but! I am half Croatian. (Not that it counts.)

    1. Half Croatian counts! You could get an EU passport and travel all over the place. I, as you may guess, would love that! So one of your parents was Yugoslavian, I assume? I remember working with a Yugoslavian woman back in the late 90s, and her telling me about the Adriatic and some of the crap her family had experienced and I was so enthralled by her story, which I had not known much about before then!

    2. Yes, my dad is first generation American, born to two Croats who came over together.

  5. Wow you take amazing photos! I didn't realize that because the photos on your blog are small, so I never expand them to see the details - wow!!! You've really got a great eye for it. Well done you. As for your question, no, but we are going to South Africa in 2026, and I would love to go to both Croatia and Nepal. I don't have a burning desire to go to Maine or Patagonia, but I wouldn't turn it down if I had a free trip or something.

    1. Thank you! They really did put them up pretty large didn't they!? Nicole, you keep talking about all of your travel plans and it makes me wonder, how far out do you plan these? Do you buy flights, and how do you decide? I would love to hear your five year plan!

    2. Here's my plan: have a retired husband who loves travel planning! Lol. Seriously though that is what happens. I don't want to give anyone an existential crisis but we have had too many people we know have health fail and my husband will be 60 next year. I have a list of places I have always wanted to go, and he does too, and we kind of feel like it's now or never? Also we are not rough travellers in any way, I like cushy travel, so we have a budget and then figure it out. I always wanted to go on safari, and thought it would be for our 25th wedding anniversary. It will be for our 24th, because why wait? After a few health scares we are trying to figure things out. We figure out where we want to go, and then Rob looks for flights and accomodations.

    3. oh and usually we plan within a year of going, but for SA it's more than that because it's a bigger, more expensive trip.

    4. That is awesome. I actually am in the same(ish) boat. I don't have a 60 year old husband, but both grandfathers passed away at around 60 and I also have a list of places I want to go and think it's now or never. You are lucky (or made smart choices) to have a husband who likes to travel as much as you do and likes to plan things! I have known many a couple where the two sides don't align. I loved SA and spent about a month there and would still go back; it is beautiful, the people were kind, and I did a lot of stuff! Highly recommend (oh and in Cape Town there is some great food, I think we really liked one called Grub and Vine)!

  6. Wow. Amazing photos. I used to use an SLR camera all the time. I love it. Such great photos. Now when I try to gather photos for my Christmas poem/photo collage, I have to look at my hard drive where I download photos from the SLR, and google photos where pics land from my camera. It is so confusing. Now that I have an iPhone, my guess is that we won't even bring another camera when we travel to Italy next semester.

I would go back to Vancouver in a heartbeat. So wonderful. Same with Budapest. Ed ranked Croatia as one of his top visits when he studied abroad, so I'd like to go there.

    1. Yeah, getting them from the DSLR to the cloud used to be a pain but I bet there is an easier way now. I hate having to organize my hard drive, that is for sure, but I also have fear that things will be lost, so I have digital photos all over the place. I also really like Vancouver, and have been there several times and would go again. I still have Budapest on my list though!

  7. Cool photo blog post, those photos are beautiful. I love photography as well, and have always taken way too many, haha. I'm trying to be better at culling but it is hard to me. :-)

I haven't been to any of those places (yet), unfortunately.

    1. It is hard for me too! Also having a cloud now makes it easy to just keep taking them!

  8. The article and photos on the Viewfinder blog are stunning, Kyria! Congratulations on being featured there! I have a DSLR camera that I hardly ever use any more. The iPhone camera is just so convenient. I don't take nearly as many photos as I used to.

    1. Thanks Michelle! I finally sold my DSLR because I was barely using it once phone cameras got so convenient!

  9. Such beautiful pictures! Congratulations! I have a soft spot for those old barns in big fields, I'm not sure why.

    1. Me too! I worked in Missouri for a while and had the best time just taking photos of barns all summer!

  10. Fantastic photos Kyria. Wonderful. I also enjoy photography, although travelling I've been using my iphone, I do have a Olympus mirrorless camera which I love as well, although it doesn't come out as much now. Before my last trip I got the iPhone 16 and it was a big step up in quality (the optical zooms are a bonus) from my previous phone. Of the destinations above I've been to South Africa. I'd love to go to the rest, but Patagonia would be my top choice.

    1. As a hiker, you would love Patagonia. I had the best time there and it was so beautiful. Plus I enjoyed the culture in Argentina and Chili, and got to practice my Spanish in real life! I am in the same boat as you with my phone; now that the cameras are better, I was not carrying my DSLR around and so I finally sold it, even though it pained me. However, I really was not using it very much anymore.
