Round The World (RTW) Episode Five

Over the years, I have stopped working to take various longer adventures around the world. The first was in 1999, when, after taking a semester of French, I signed up for a work abroad summer program and went to Bordeaux to work in a French supermarket. I overpacked, bungled around with the language and learned very quickly how to summon help and to be relieved to hear "j'arrive."

Tour de France, 1999 (Lance Armstrong won that year)

In 2004, I quit my job and went to live in London. After being there for a couple of months, and doing some local traveling in Europe, I stayed in Paris for a month before moving to Istanbul. This was my first version of a round the world trip. During this trip, I did a lot of things wrong (not fully understanding the entry restrictions, running out of money WAY faster than expected, etc.) but I learned a lot and had a great time despite my trip only lasting about six months in the end.

London 2004

Since then, I have taken a sabbatical and/or quit my job to travel the world three more times. In 2006, I spent about four months traveling in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, including the Philippines and Borneo. In fact, as I mentioned in this post, my first ever blog post was in April 2006 from Vietnam (how quaint it was)! That means that in just two more years I will be celebrating my 20 year blog-iversary, woof! In 2008, I spent almost a year in South America and in 2010, I did a year long round the world trip (Europe, Africa, India, Nepal, South Korea, China, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand).

Singapore 2006

Guatamala 2006

Australia 2006

Chili 2008

Brazil 2008

Peru 2008

South Africa 2010

Nepal 2010

Every time I have decided to do this, it has been a nervous combination of excitement and fear. Quitting your job and going off into the great unknown is scary, but also traveling to countries you have never been to is fun! However, there is always that element of the unknown and sometimes it feels a bit intimidating to be doing this every day or week or month as you move from place to place. We get so used to our daily routines, and so comfortable with them, even if we are also sometimes stuck in a rut and want change!

Istanbul 2004

So this post is to tell you that I am ready for episode five of the RTW travel adventure. Since my last big trip in 2011, I have pretty much only gone somewhere every one or two years and I want more! So, at long last, basically 25 years since my first big adventure, I have decided once again to step out of the rut and jump back into excitement and fear...This includes quitting my job, selling my house, selling/donating/tossing all of my things, packing up my meager belongings into a backpack and/or onto a bike and hitting the road.

This space will still be manned, and I will probably also be resurrecting my Instagram page if you want to follow along there too (the link is in my Who Am I page).

Currently, I plan to start by doing some biking around the northern/Midwest states of the US and southern(ish) part of Canada. I know this is a bit broad, but if you are in one of these areas, and I can pedal to your house or town, I would love to meet for a coffee or a meal! Let me know if that sounds like something you would want to do (you can comment below or my email is on my Who Am I page). After that, I will likely be doing some slow travel (staying in places for ~ a month at a time) and will start in Asia (I think?) at first and then...to infinity and beyond? The world is, once again, my oyster.

Have you ever done any extended traveling? If so, how do you keep from getting burned out? Have you ever stayed in one place for a month or more?

  1. Eeep!!!! I am so excited for you and the adventures to come!!!

I've never taken time off, but I have ambitions to stop working next year. My travel plans have been slowed down by a certain puppy, but I am planning to do some short solo adventures over the next few years. Part of my travel plans this year are to start meeting Cool Bloggers IRL, and hopefully our paths will cross.

See ya over on the 'gram!

    1. Oh man, now I am going to have to use the gram...I have been very bad at it over the years! But thank you; I am really looking forward to getting out of dodge and I am sure we can make some sort of meetup work out! Get bikkie out and let's do it!

    1. The work hubs is going to travel for the next ~ 6 months (his wife works for a secondary school so she gets summers off) and then he come back and probably go back to work for a while. He also has the wanderlust, and he and his wife actually met while both traveling in Brazil!

Don't worry, I have your number and I know where you live! :)

  3. I am so excited for this news! As someone who ended up in Wales due to a RTW adventure in 2007 I LOVE reading about other peoples adventures! Ahh what a very super awesome time for you and I'm glad I get to follow your travels here on the blog too. YAYYYYY ADVENTURE!

    1. Aw thanks! Adventures are fun! I did not know that is how you ended up in Wales; actually I was wondering how you did! I would love to hear your story, or maybe you already have a link you could share, about your RTW trip and how you ended up where you are!

  4. Wow! How exciting! I will be very happy to follow along your travels. I've never traveled like this (I would guess my longest trip was 3 weeks) but keyboard-following I can do.

    1. I will look forward to your keyboard follow. I actually blogged a lot during my 2010 RTW trip and have maintained a lot of those relationships over the years! It is amazing how the internet keeps us together, isn't it!?

    1. Thanks Nance! I hope that I have some interesting things to talk about here and that I don't just bore everyone with my repetitive tales! I will also still be keeping up with all of you, albeit maybe a bit more far between.

  6. I had a feeling this was your big news! How exciting! I can't wait to follow along on your travels. It's going to be an epic adventure!

I've never done long-term traveling like this. I am such a homebody and I love having my creature comforts of home - and I have pets so I would miss them SO much if I went away for longer than a week.

    1. Thanks Stephany! Long term travel is fun, but yes, even crazy adventurers miss the comforts of home. I am getting close to my move out date, and of course, the excitement/anxiety of this kind of thing sort of ramps up. So I am trying to enjoy my bed now, and know that there will be stops at friends houses with comfort, even if it is not my own bed etc. This trip would have been harder if my kitty were still alive for sure!

  7. This is Lisa. I am so glad this is blog official now! I can’t wait to follow along vicariously! And you know you have a place to stay in Minneapolis!!

I haven’t ever taken a really extended trip. My longest trip was a 3 week trip to France during grad school. I did a 2 week program in Lyon and tagged time on before and after to spend time in Paris. Other than that I studied abroad in college and traveled a lot while I was in Australia but that’s it! I do hope to travel more when we are retired, though!!

    1. I would love to hear more about Lyon! I have always had that as a place on my list, although I do not know much about it! I think studying abroad is a pretty good glimpse of another culture, which is why I enjoy a little slower travel. However, much of my last RTW was more like a week in each place, so not particularly slow, so I am looking forward to seeing how that kind of travel pans out. But the first leg is going to be exactly the opposite of slow!

  8. This is so exciting, and brave. I look forward to following along on your adventures. The last two years we stayed in Noosa for a month from end of May to end of June. It was great but we still worked because we have remote jobs. Our month of travel last year hit my husband’s time limit so I don’t think any multi-month travel is on my horizon. But we plan to get away a few times a year at least if possible.

    1. That is a great way to test it out! What was it that your husband did not like past one month? Did he just miss home? That is definitely part of it, that and connections, when you are away for a while. You do get a bit of the "single serving friend" blues, as you don't often stay long enough to meet people and have friends in a place. We shall see how that goes this time! This time the internet and social connections are more prevalent than in the past, so maybe that will help?

    2. This is Lisa. Phil would also not be a fan of a long stretch of travel. I think he likes the comforts and predictability of being home. And doesn’t like adjusting to new places? Or he feels like it would get old to travel for a long stretch? I haven’t asked any deep questions about it but when you come visit (I’m counting on it!) maybe we can discuss it. Our vacations tend to be a max of 4 nights right now. A lot of that has to do with the ages of our kids, though. But I don’t see us taking a 2 week trip somewhere - at least not until we retire. Right now I don’t know how either of us could get away for 2 weeks at work…

    3. Lisa, I think you have to get into a certain mindset when traveling for a long time. We are so used to our two week vacations and going back home afterward that I think we sometimes don't see being away as relaxing after a while. Also the routine is definitely different but there can still be a routine of sorts. Many people still get up, work out, have a time to write or read or whatever each day etc. so that it is not so much different from normal life.

  9. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ANNOUNCEMENT! I am so excited for you!!! Yayyyyy! And yes, if you are in Kelowna, please do let me know. I don't know if you'll be this far out west, but if so, yessss!

    1. For sure; you are on my list! I actually may just bikepack right past your house to be honest; there is a route called the BC Epic 1000 that I am hoping to go on. Or if I am burned out by then, can I just come and drink wine with you? I will even cook dinner so you don't have to!

      Delete
    2. YES! I always have wine! And I live on a vineyard, so if for some reason I ran out of wine (this has never happened, but I guess it could) I could easily obtain more!

  10. OMG, I was reading along, thinking, how does she handle her home and job and such on such amazing, epic adventures? And then I see you are selling your house and quitting your job! I am in awe of your adventuresome wanderlust, and am going to try to remember to check Instagram once in awhile to see what's going on with you!

    1. Am I clueless? I couldn't find your 'About Me' page with contact info. I found you on Instagram though and added you. I VERY rarely post there, but I sometimes remember to peek.

    2. You are not an idiot; I am an idiot!! My page is called Who Am I?, not About Me. Sorry about that! And it's on the very bottom of that page, as I don't really want to make it super easy to find as I used to and I got a lot of spam! Anyway, I am bad at IG so I am going to need to get back on the ball with that, so we can learn and grow together!

    1. Email me, please do! As I said above to J, my page is is "Who Am I" and the email is at the bottom of the page. I do think Indonesia will be on my list for 2025 actually, so you may be seeing me before you know it! I have never been to Jakarta, only Bali, but am always looking for suggestions and love it when there is someone local to show me around!

  12. We are complete opposites. I would never leave my town if I didn't have to (southeast Wisconsin - you have a place here if you like!), but I will eagerly be following along with your adventures.

    1. We are opposites in some ways but not in others! I do have WI on my list and as you may remember, it is one of the states I have not been to. I have always heard good things about Madison, as I had friends who went there, but don't actually know too much about the rest of the state to be honest. The people are very nice though!

  13. This is AMAZING!!!!! I don't have Insta but hoping to follow along here. Extended travel: 6 months in Chile :) I was pregnant with L then, too - Fulbright grant research in Chile.

    1. Great! And also I have put all of your travel recommendations on my list (it is a long one) and do plan on going to some of the places that you told me about! I can't wait. I will probably have more questions for you as time goes by.

I really loved Chile; Patagonia was one of my favorite places, and I spent a lot of time in the smaller towns, and everywhere was great actually. I only spent a few days in Santiago, but it was a fun city too, but I think my favorite city was Valparaiso. Where were you? Do you speak Spanish?

  14. AHHH! This is so exciting. I am simultaneously thrilled for you and frustrated that this is not something I could do. I am inspired, though, to get out of my apartment - even for short "adventures". I can't wait to follow along! And also! If you come to Madison, you can hit 3 bloggers at once! (Do you read Sarah at harrytimes.com, and Grateful Kae? I thought you did, but... maybe not?) Plus, Engie is not too far away. Four birds with one stone. ;)

I just realized that I missed a couple of your posts somehow so am going over to say hi in a minute! Hopefully you are out enjoying the (still nice?) weather this weekend and do not have too busy of a week in front of you.

  16. Ok I'm super behind on commenting on posts but circling back here to say OOOOOMMMMMMGGGGGG!!!! This is soooo exciting!!! I have not been using IG much lately but I actually do love it for travel posting. I tend to post pics on Facebook (still use that...) since most of my real life people I know are on FB. But I actually like how Instagram forces you to limit to less than 10 photos I think in a post. So you end up with a nice splattering of highlights only (which, as you know, I am normally terrible at. LOL. I'm like, Queen of Way Too Detailed Everything.) I will have to check out your IG and peek in there more often!

    1. Thanks for circling back! I do not use IG much either, but am going to try to be better. I do not use FB but do have an account but I got kind of tired of the politics of it to be honest, plus I just end up wasting time on it, plus it drains my phone battery, even when I put my phone in battery saver mode. I did not know that IG limits the number of photos, so I guess I have not tried to add too many!

  17. Kyria I’m super late commenting again but Lisa was filling me in more on your adventure. When we were texting while you were in BC I didn’t realize what an epic big trip you were on! I’m here to say you should add Northern BC to your travels. It’s gorgeous up here and very off the beaten path, I think you’d love it. If you decide to take your bike up to Alaska I’m right on the route ;)

    1. Haha! I would love to visit you, but I am not sure that I will be heading that way in the near future. I am currently headed east from Duluth towards Nova Scotia, but you never know what may be next. I would like to maybe pick a couple of Canadian towns to "live" in for a month at some point. I really do think BC is my favorite province (sorry AB!!) so far so I would likely pick somewhere there!!
