Happy almost November, Dia De Los Muertos and Halloween!

Sal's Tacos in West Sacramento

Reading: All Together Now by Mike Carter, which is a book about a man who decides to walk from Liverpool to London in honor of the 1981 People's March For Jobs which his Dad participated in. The original march was a protest to the Thacher government and the high unemployment it brought. I am learning a lot about the little towns in England as well as some of the politics.

Loving: Collagen (I use this one). I put some in my coffee every morning and my fingernails grow so fast! I can't say that I have noticed other changes, but maybe the lack of certain changes is enough for me!

Thinking: About traveling. I took the Amtrak on Friday to go to my parent's house and it was so fun. I mentioned it to my coworker and he started looking into longer trips and the conversation made me want to book a train vacation!

Frustrated: With people who play their music out loud in public places or trails etc. This happened a few times this weekend. One was on the Amtrak when the guy next to me put his music on out loud on his phone. The other times were on a bike path and the street. I just find that rude and am not sure why they don't feel the need to use headphones (the same applies for out loud phone calls).

Feeling: Unmotivated to start working on my Christmas cards. I know once I get started and get in a groove it will be fine, but getting started is evading me.

Anticipating: This weekend when I will be auntie to A. I will take her to her soccer game on Saturday but before that we will also do some fun things like watch an old movie (maybe Spaceballs, which she has not seen), bake some things and play games.

Watching: Anne With An E on Netflix. It is very cute and is bringing back memories of the books, which I have not read in ages. In fact, it is making me want to go back and read them again!

Working: NOT on my Christmas card!

Grateful: That my family is all happy and healthy and that everyone can still do (and wants to do) our annual Thanksgiving hike before dinner.

Listening: To the audiobook The Perfect Marriage as well as the Adventure Sports Podcast

Wishing: There were more summer weekends still, so I could go out for one last Sierra backpacking trip!

What are you listening to? What are you anticipating? Have you started your holiday cards yet?

  1. Listening to a lot of playlists on Spotify. I listen to music every single day. Anticipating: being done with all my photo creations (calendars + ordering the cards). I have my card ready but haven't ordered it, but will do the calendar order at the same time and I'm waiting on one sibling to get my their photos!

In the short term I'm REALLY anticipating getting a hair cut on Friday. Every time I get a bob I tell myself I'm never going that short again and then I grow my hair out and it starts to drive me crazy. So, I'm getting it cut but I'm also - for the first time ever - getting a keratin relaxing treatment. The appointment takes FOUR hours and will cost more than I usually spend in 2 years on haircuts (which is not much since I only get a wash, cut and dry every 6-8 months and never do anything else like a colour etc). So I'm really excited to see how this works. It's supposed to cut out frizz and "poof" and I'm really hoping it stops me from shedding so much hair. I have a lot of hair and it's very thick so no one could tell, but I shed so much hair and it's a nuisance.

    1. I still am in awe of you finishing all of your photo projects already! Go you! I think I will work on mine this weekend, but it is just hard to get started!

I have not gotten my hair cut in a couple of years! Every two or three years I lop it all off and donate it and then I grow it for a couple more years and lop it again. In between, I pretty much cut off the dead ends myself, but I don't do much more than that. It's just not high on my list of to dos.. I have never heard of a keratin treatment but am looking forward to hearing how it goes. I have stick straight hair (BO-ring!) so don't really need to do much in the way of treatments (although I did get a perm once, but that is a story for another day.)

  2. Eek! Am I supposed to be starting my holiday cards? I'm definitely not that organized.
I've been listening to some great podcasts lately- Sally McRae's Choose Strong is my current favorite. And, anticipating my son coming home for Thanksgiving!!! It's almost November- coming right up.

    1. Wow, it feels like just yesterday that you were taking your son to school! I am sure that it will be so good to see him again, and Thanksgiving will be here before we know it.

I love Sally; she is so positive. I don't know if you have watched her YouTube videos about her 200+ mile races (Tahoe and Cocodona I think were the most recent) but she is so strong. She goes through so much and still comes out on the other end smiling (and running in some cases). She is very inspiring!

  3. As I am typing this I am listening to a podcast called, "she wants more." I am anticipating trick or treating tomorrow night in freezing cold temps, yay ha. And I have most definitely not started our holiday cards. I have bought some presents though. I really liked Ann with an E, it does get darker the further in you get.

    1. I am in season three of Anne and I just watched the one with the printing press. I do not remember this part at all from the books so I am not sure if they are just dramatizing it or if I am forgetting what I read. I may have to go back and read the series once I get done watching, just to realign the two stories in my mind.

Have fun trick or treating! I hope that it is not too cold...

  4. I hate people making noises in public space too, even my husband when he watches YouTube videos when we are together, I ask him to put his headphones. I like silence when reading so really annoys me. I don't do Christmas cards so I'm just anticipating/planning our December break.

    1. I agree re your husband and YouTube! I think I have a low tolerance for noise though. My parents have a dining table with a squeaky leg that makes a noise every time you butter bread or poke your meat and it drives me crazy, although they do not even notice it!

  5. Yep I know exactly what you mean by wanting more summer weekends. Also I've got trains on my brains. It's in the very early stages, but I'm thinking about a trip west where I've never been and going by train. I'm also hearing great things about the train system in Canada...so many places to go and so little time...

Sigh, as always I'm too busy thinking about trains to comprehend that it's almost Halloween which means it's almost Thanksgiving which means it's almost a week before Christmas when my husband will talk about sending holiday cards...

    1. Well since you are talking about trains! Did you know you can get a multipass for about $500 (for coach) on Amtrak and it is good for 120 days, but once you use it you have 30 days and a max of 10 legs? I think that sounds pretty good as it essentially means you could get to the west coast with four stops and then get home with four different stops...all in one month! My grandma hated to fly so she would always take the train from Boston and she wrote about it in her journal, which is so fun to read! She even kept track of the prices, which have gone up a bit since she rode the train!

Tell hubby to get a move on and get those cards out early! For me I feel so much better when the task it done so I try to get it done early so I can actually enjoy the holiday and not feel like I am always in a rush.

  6. I took the train from NC to Maryland when I was in college and a friend picked me up at the station. I haven't done a train ride since then but I would again as long as I wasn't on a time crunch. When I was in Brooklyn earlier this year we rode the subway and it feels like no time is passing but then I look and it's 30-45 minutes later. It felt that way when I was in Boston and took the T many years ago, oh my word rabbit hole, it's been 19 years since I visited Boston! Admittedly I don't use headphones when I run outside, I worry about being able to hear what is around me. I listen to my podcasts but it's rarely crowded and there are not people around me who can hear, I might handle it differently if there were more people around me. We got family pictures done but I'm not certain I will do Christmas cards. I might, I think I have time this year and I can probably make it happen. Last year was too hard to think about any kind of card. The year before I was so busy I did Valentine's cards, which I love because even though it's a made up holiday I still love it! Has A seen Princess Bride, LOVE that movie!!! Also love Spaceballs and now I have scenes playing in my head! LOL! It was 83 here yesterday so I feel like I got one last glimpse of summer before it turned cold today.

    1. Maybe it is time for another train ride in your life! If you have a station nearby, you could even do a day or overnight pretty easily. I found that the stations along the way were actually located in pretty convenient places! I have spent several of my life without a car (by choice) and so have taken all manner of public transportation, and let me tell you; the train is much nicer than the Greyhound that runs the same route! I agree; the T and MTA are so convenient and wouldn't it be nice if it were like that everywhere!?

Oh no, you are one of those people! Haha. I have a friend who has weirdly shaped earholes and he did not wear headphones for a while, but he found that those bone conducting ones were perfect for him. They sit outside the ears so he can still hear everything around him, but he can also hear his podcasts! Game changer.

Funny you mention Princess Bride as that is the movie I made her watch for our last movie night! She did love it, although her favorite part was a strange one (when princess pushes Westley down the hill because she thinks he is the dread pirate Roberts and as he rolls he says, "aaaaasss yoooooou wiiiiishhhh." I am just glad she liked it, but am looking forward to saying lines like "hot, too hot" or "we are all a$$holes" to her and her getting what I am saying.

  7. Oooh I did NOT like Anne With An E! I thought it strayed way too far from the books - this is a Me Problem, as it is the reason I almost never like film adaptations. I did, however, like the OG Anne from the 80s. I used to have it on VHS and I wish I still had it, and a way to watch it. The old commercials would be worth it!
I have been obsessed with the podcast The Deep Dive and have been listening to back episodes. I'm reading Sweet Bitter which is really compelling reading.

    1. It has been so long since I have read the books that I can't remember all the details, so I think that I was not as offended as you are! However, I do want to re-read them and will probably then wish that the show had not strayed... I did think the third season got to be a bit too much at times, and also was asking my Mom if she remembered Aunt Josephine being gay, because either I did not get some nuance or they are dramatizing it a lot. I do remember the old movie and my Mom probably has it on VHS still! Her puffed sleeves in that movie were excellent!

I will have to check out the Deep Dive an can't wait to hear your final review on Sweet Bitter!

  8. Hmm... I was all set to say I need to watch Anne with an E, but then Nicole's comment makes me pause. I just reread the books back in 2021 or 2022, and I generally do not get too bothered when film/TV adaptations stray from the source material, so maybe I'll give it a try and see.

I am currently listening to 1989 (Taylor's Version), anticipating a trip to TN at the end of the year, and not worrying about holiday cards because I don't send them out! Ha.

    1. I think not sending out cards is the way to go, although I really do like the giving part and love seeing people's families grow over the years. I don't really do FB, so this is kind of my way of checking in. However, it is definitely a lot of time and money and effort, so maybe I just need a reset!

Where are you going in TN? I have only been to Memphis, but would like to visit Nashville one day as well as some of the other rural places that I probably don't even know about yet. I went to Kentucky and Indiana and was amazed at how beautiful some of the more rural areas are!

  9. I would like to get started on our holiday cards but haven't gotten around to it yet. I try to order them early so we can get them out right after Thanksgiving. I have tomorrow off and another Friday in 2 weeks so maybe I will tackle this then.

K's kids are so lucky to have you in their life. I wish my kids had an auntie Kyria!

    1. I am with you! Actually I just try to get mine out before I receive yours! Just kidding, but I do always try to have everything ready to mail by Thanksgiving, then I can send them at the end of Nov/beginning of Dec. I always giggle when I get your card, as it really is usually right when I have also sent mine, but you do tend to beat me by a day or two usually.

You know, being auntie to K's kids has been an unexpected pleasure. I am now soccer mom, therapist, cooking teacher and so much more! They are so fun to be with, even when they are being annoying. Tonight we are going to make candles and play Clue and hopefully watch Spaceballs, and then its rainy day soccer tomorrow..but no matter what we do, the time spent together is priceless. And PS - your kids do have an auntie Kyria, just one who is not as involved!!

  10. That taco place looks so cute! I'd love it.

I used to take collagen daily when I was counting macros/ focusing on protein intake more. I have fallen out of the habit but I really should reincorporate it! I don't know that I saw any "immediate" benefits exactly, but it's supposed to be good for you.

I really never read all the Anne of Green gable as a kid! I have been intrigued by that show and have thought about watching. And, maybe reading!

I am inspired by many blogger friends knocking out their Christmas cards so early! I should get on this sooner than later, too. It always turns into a Production for me because I like to make a card with various photos from our yearly travels. And if you haven't noticed, I take about 900,426 photos on every trip. So it takes for.ever to sort through and narrow down options.... I always say I am going to "star' photos in real time when I'm on trips or selecting for blog posts so that I'd have a parred down Christmas Card folder to choose from. But alas, I didn't really do this...

    1. Your honesty is refreshing! I also say that I am going to star photos in real time, or once a month or on some sort of organized schedule, but it tends to get away from me and every year I end up starring them in November, just like this year! However, I have become a bit less picky, like I will scroll to a trip, star a handful and move on, instead of looking at all 99,567 photos of that trip. That has helped immensely!

You should read AoGG and then watch the movie from the 80s, as that one is a classic. Then if you still like it, you can watch the show, but Nicole is right, there are some deviations from the book, so if that annoys you, you may want to stick with the first two (or maybe watch the show first and then read the book?)

Did you ever figure out your gut issues? I haven't heard you talk about that, and I hope that means that you are good now!

  11. We don't do photo cards like most people these days, I just buy boxed cards and send those out. With hand written notes though! They take time. I bought mine at the after Christmas sales last year, so I'm ahead on that. I guess I'll start on them after NaBloPoMo, because right now that's where my spare time goes. :-)

We watched part of Anne with an E and liked it, but it got pretty dark I thought. I don't remember the books being that way, but I haven't read them since I was a kid, so maybe it's just that that aspect went over my head, like re-reading 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn'.

    1. It did get pretty dark! Also I don't remember some of the issues, like racism, sexuality, elitism etc. being in the book. I have the boxed set and am definitely going to go back and re-read to see if those just went over my head or not!

  12. I use the same collagen and love it (and think it's helping?)... I am also not ready to deal with Christmas cards, although I know we've got to get on it. It's all sneaking up on me again this year. The week after next is Thanksgiving. WHAT?

    1. I actually got a lot of my cards done yesterday but my printer ran out of ink! So today I have to go and get more ink and print the rest of them and then I will be pretty much 95% of the way done! Yay! It feels so good to get it done so I can just send them out as soon as Thanksgiving is over!
