Summer Flurries

Some things fill up fast in the summer and lately I have been in a mood to plan. This means the summer weekends are nearly all booked! Here are some of the things I am looking forward to in the next few months:

Oregon:  In a few weeks, I head north for the Gorges 100k, which will not be my best race, but it will be a lot of fun, and I expect some great beer at the end. Later this year I will go to Sisters for my annual girls' trip with my friend, her two girls and her mom. This year her sister and three kids are going to join us, so it's going to be a gaggle of girls!

Mt. Washington, Oregon

Yosemite: I have been several times, but can never get enough. So much so, in fact, that I have not one but two trips planned to the Sierra Nevada mountains near Yosemite this summer. The first trip will be in May for my parent's anniversary and the next will be in August for some trail running and hiking. I got really lucky and got a campsite (you basically have to camp on line all the time until one opens up) for both weekends. I am really looking forward to some fun times out in the mountains!

Colorado: Lisa and I just booked a weekend in Colorado in late May where we will do lots of hiking. Check out this site, which has a ton of great looking hikes! I only hope that the snow is gone enough for us to do some of the higher routes. However, if not, we are happy to go wherever the wind takes us! I am really excited because I have always heard about how great the hikes are in Colorado, and have even been looking into some Ultraracing there. This will be a great preview for possible trail races as well as a fun time with a friend who I have not seen in a while!

Tahoe:  TRT Training Run: Last year I did this, and it was a ton of fun. This is a weekend in June where you go up to Tahoe and do back to back training runs on the weekend. This is a great way to get used to the elevation while also enjoying great scenery and hanging out with a bunch of great people.  TRT: The actual 100 mile race is in July and I am looking forward to finishing this race and having a great time doing it!

Tahoe Rim Trail

Europe: A friend of mine got into UTMB, which is 100+ mile race around Mont Blanc, and I am planning on heading there with her for some running, hiking, good food and a bit of exploration. Things are really just starting to come together, so I will have more on this later!

Mayerhofen, Austria

Besides these fun travel plans (and I love the planning them!) the weekends are also full of races, family time and other events which have pretty much taken up every weekend. I am not complaining, but I will have to start booking some "free" weekends before I get too crazy!

What do you have planned for this summer? Where has been your favorite place you have ever traveled to? What is your favorite place that you go year after year?

  1. Wow, you have a lot of travel planned. I have just a handful of small, regional trips on the horizon and already my bosses are mildly panicked. Heaven help us - I took a Friday off! The world will stop turning!

  2. Wow, you have lots of fun trips planned! I am glad that one includes me. :) We are going to have so much fun in CO. I, too, hope the snow is gone so we can do some higher elevation hikes but we'll make it work no matter what!

I don't have too much planned for the summer yet. I have our CO trip in late May, I know I"ll spend the 4th at my parents cabin, I'm hoping to go to DC in August to meet my friend Becky's baby, and in September I'm going to visit Amber in Kamlops. Besides that I'll fit some other lake weekends in. I just read a book set in Paris and it's making me ache for a trip to Europe but I don't think I am going to be able to fit it in... Spring would have been ideal but I've got some conferences that I need to prepare for/attend in April/May so it won't work to take a trip then, and then summer is filling up and the fall will be busy between marathon training and a trip to Miami with the girls in my family... But I guess it's a first world problem to not be able to fit in a trip to Europe. ;) I could always go in the late fall but I would kind of rather go when it's a bit warmer. We'll see.

  3. Sweet! You're going to love exploring CO with Lisa.

My spring fills up super fast, but summer here tends to drag on. i'm going to the Masters again this year on April 10, and nothing but kid stuff after that until about September.

  5. ALL THE MOUNTAINS!!!! Love that your year is turning out to be full of great trips with wonderful people! Our travel is a little more spread out. But, we are heading to New York City this week. In April, we will head up to Milwaukee for a day. In May, we are spending a weekend in St. Louis. In June, we will go camping with friends at a state park on Lake Michigan (on the Michigan side). In July, we will spend a week in Mammoth. In August, we will spend a week in Big Sur/Santa Cruz/San Francisco (hopefully, we'll see you!). In early September, we will go camping in Door County (Wisconsin). In November, we will head to Cape Cod for Thanksgiving. There's nothing on the books in October or December - clearly, I've gotta get working on that. ha.

  7. So much fun! You do have a crazy busy summer ahead of you! Love all the awesome stuff you have planned. Right now we have our trip to Maui planned and also a trip back to the Sunshine Coast for our anniversary in July. No other plans are set in stone but I would like to get out for lots of camping excursions this summer!

  8. You have an amazing summer coming up! So busy. That's fun that you and Lisa have a trip planned together :) the only thing we have planned for the summer is a trip to Ontario to see my family. Brian will hopefully be teaching summer school in July, so it would just be weekend trips

  9. Ah, 100K, you are crazy! ;) You will be in such good shape during/after all of this. Would love to come see you somewhere on the course, but not sure it will work out this time. Are you flying into PDX and camping/hoteling out near the race? And your trip with Lisa to Colorado sounds awesome. Such a beautiful state.
