After being in Bangkok for the month of April, which meant hot hot temps and a general lethargy due to the humidity (despite or maybe also due to eating lots of good food), I was kind of ready to go home and see people and be in cooler temps! It started with a flight home on May 1st.
May: (recap here) I had a great time with friends on our "regular 12" loop around the Marin headlands, then set off on a 10 day Alaska cruise. This is something that I would recommend to you even if you are not a cruiser. My Mom is not a huge travel fan, mostly due to the getting there and away aspect, but even she was wowed, and now talks about doing it again! We saw animals, glaciers and lots and lots of beautiful scenery. Plus I went to Glacier Bay, a new National Park!
Then, after visiting some friends, I headed to Tucson, where I started a 2,700 mile bike ride from Mexico to Canada. It was hard at first, and quite hot and dry, but soon I had my legs and it was so fun to see some of the interesting smaller towns and beautiful dirt road scenery of Arizona. Fun fact that most people may not know: Arizona has a lot of pine forests, not just desert! Another fun fact: Tucson public transit is free! Yippie.
June: (recap here) When I arrived at Flagstaff, I headed back (by bus) to Phoenix to fly to San Francisco for the World Cup. I took the Greyhound, which was not bad. Also, the Phoenix local bus system was not too shabby either. I stayed at a very swanky hotel using points, met up with a high school friend and her son, then headed to SFO. After the game there, I spent time with family, then headed to Seattle for more family time, another game, and a fun trip to Bainbridge Island (Fun fact: for $10 you can get a nice ferry ride, a great view of the skyline, and a nice wander, and plenty of options for lunch and coffee). The World Cup was fun and is something that I am really glad I did, despite the cost.
After the game, and the wonderful weather of the Bay Area and Seattle, I headed back to the oven that is Arizona, and pedaled north. I visited the Grand Canyon and had a harrowing ride through the Navajo Nation before accepting a ride with a semi truck driver to Kanab UT. From there I headed north through UT, skirted Bryce, saw a cattle drive, finally had more water options and camping in the shade, and got to ride on Skyline drive (a 100 mile stretch of road above 10,000 feet).
July: (recap here) I rode through Utah, including the Park City area, dipped into Wyoming a bit, then skirted the border of Idaho and Montana for a while before riding through a really cool section called the Magruder Corridor, which is about 100 miles of complete wilderness. I made friends with motorcycle riders, camped near some beautiful creeks, and rode up hills that I never would have thought I could (go legs!) I then popped back into Montana for the final stretch north, where I arrived at the Canada border near Roosville. Along the way, I had a nighttime encounter with a bear, but he and I parted ways amicably!

August: (recap pending) The first half of the month consisted of hanging out with an old high school friend in Montana, then meeting up with my hiking partner, Bugsy, for some time in Glacier NP and a seven day hike in the Bob Marshall wilderness. This was great, except for the fires and smoke, and some major "bushwhacking" through downed trees due to some crazy winter microbursts. At some points we were climbing over piles of downed trees that were easily 15 or 20 feet high!

After leaving Bugsy, I headed to OH, a new state to me, to meet up with Birchie. She showed me around the state, introduced me to my new favorite beer, and made sure that when I said that I had "been to OH" before, I really meant it (not just through the airport as I had in the past). Then we set out for The Blogger Extraordinaire (TBE), a roughly 4,000 road trip from Ohio to Montana and back, with a goal to see lots of capitol buildings, national parks and PEOPLE. And that we did! We also ate good food, stayed in some interesting accommodations, learned a ton of different things, talked about everything and did some hikes and runs along the way. More recaps will be coming soon about this. Let's just say that it was good, but stay tuned for more!
Stay tuned for some favorite places, animals, eats and lots of fun rating systems where I rate runs, accommodation, national parks, new states and more!
What fun things have you been up to this summer!?! Lay it on me!

Yikes! The bear encounter sounds concerning!! I am glad you parted ways peacefully!! You have had quite an adventurous summer! But you’ve had a years long stretch of adventures. I imagine you are kind of looking forward to the pet sitting stretches ahead when you will be in one place for awhile!!
ReplyDeleteMy summer has been more about small adventures, like days at the pool, bike rides in the neighborhood, and time at my parents lake home. Hosting you and Caroline was a highlight but it was far too short of a visit!
The bear came, he sniffed, he left! I definitely like to change it up and have some quiet time interspersed with the busy times for sure. After this road trip I will definitely be ready for some down time, but not due to the company, just due to my recharge being a bit behind... Your summer sounds great; I love days at the pool and bike rides in the neighborhood. I always love visiting you and "going about your day" with you; for me it is nice to have a routine of sorts or to see yours! Our visit was too short but they usually are! I know I will see you again soon!
DeleteYou've had some wonderful adventures! Good for you for taking time away from the Internet to really be present for your journey. Of course, I want to read more, more, more! My summer has been the most social one I've had in a long time - probably since pre-pandemic. I'm SO HAPPY I got to meet you and Birchie! Thank you for including me on your epic road trip!
ReplyDeleteWe could not have an epic road trip without you! I really enjoyed seeing your surroundings, your home, and of course, your doll house! Also meeting your hubby and getting the grand tour. He sure is a good sport! Thanks again for everything and I can't wait to come back for my "work week" next time! 😊
DeleteI definitely want more details!!! I'm definitely enjoying Birchie's recaps of TBE. I would love to hear more about your time in the southwest. It's a part of the country I've barely been to and it looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteSo let's see... I went to Indiana! Ha ha, that sounds boring BUT it was for my son's wedding, which was obviously amazing. That was the highlight of my summer.
I definitely need to update you on the southwest; there is so much to see and so much to say about it all! I am glad Birchie is holding down the update fort; my posts will be a while in coming, but they will come someday. Indiana sounds great! I don't think that your son getting married could have possibly been boring! I am sure it was a lovely time!
DeleteJenny, we thought of you when we went to Indiana Dunes! It's the Valparaiso exit!
DeleteWow. Just wow! I would love a more detailed post on this crazy bike ride. I am in awe. And the bear. (Ok I did walk 800 km..twice actually but not being a cyclist that somehow seems harder). Holy shit! I felt some terror just reading about it but I’m really scared of bears. You are quite an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely be doing some more posts about the bike ride! It was a lot of fun but of course was also challenging! 800 km is no small feat either! I feel that walking is harder actually, although I also find I can get more remote that way, so there are pros and cons to both.
DeleteThe nice thing about the internet is that it is always here, so it is compatible with going off and having adventures. And adventures you have had!
ReplyDeleteI remember when the TBE was just a spreadsheet and now we're living it!
The dream has become the reality! I love the entire process of dreaming, planning and executing. Of course having a little downtime in between helps too!
DeleteI am loving this travelogue. The photos are terrific.
ReplyDeleteAND ON A BIKE IN THE SOUTHWEST--you are the Iron Woman. What a way to see the country, though, right? (I will never know. I haven't been on a bike in ages and ages.)
I'm so glad you and Birchie were able to meet up with me at the lakehouse. It was a pleasure being with you both IRL.
I am so glad we could meet up too! Visiting with you and the other friends we have met with has definitely been the highlight of the trip!
DeleteWow what an eventful past month. So much living. I love it. Looking forward reading some more posts from you and your travels.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am looking forward to getting settled and posting more, reading more and finally commenting more!
DeleteI just love reading about your adventures, Kyria! What an epic summer!
ReplyDeleteOne of the best parts was meeting up with so many bloggers that I had been following but never met IRL!
DeleteYou two are so motivating with your blog and capitol tour! Plus all of your other adventures. I’m glad you got to go to the World Cup. I’m sure that was expensive, but clearly not something one gets to do often. I’m not a cruise person, but I think I would go on an Alaska cruise in a heartbeat. I’ve always resisted because I have family there and want to spend time with them rather than on a cruise, but that scenery is SO BEAUTIFUL, I think it would be worth blowing off my family a bit.
ReplyDeleteThe scenery was very beautiful! You are correct. That is always a bit of a challenge, balancing time with friends with time sightseeing! I am not sure that I've gotten the hang of it myself! I'm not sure if you could get off midway but if you could, that would be ideal. Or there's a ship that goes from Bellingham to Alaska that you can take your car on. Maybe that would be a good compromise.
DeleteWooh! You packed so much into these last few months! Amazing. How do you “digest” it all? It all sounds so much fun (and also exhausting) and I especially loved the part when you met up with Birchie to roadtrip and meet up with cool bloggers. What a treat!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It was a lot of fun! How do I digest it? One bite at a time! No really though, I often do not do as much touristy stuff and try to so only one thing per day and have relax time. However, summertime is time to be outside and I definitely have made the most of it! I am ready for a bit of normalcy though, and am spending some time resting a bit before heading out on the next leg.
DeleteI'm back tracking - realizing I read this last week (maybe) and never commented. So many cool places and adventures. You were all over the place. Biking and world cupping. You never cease to amaze me.
ReplyDeleteMy summer adventures pale in comparison. Our trip to SC to drop Curly at college was about as exciting as it got here. We didn't travel much this summer, but that's in part because we drove to Florida for spring break and next summer Yellowstone. Stay tuned!
Your adventures sound fun! I am kind of a lone wolf normally but you are surrounded by fun and adventures everywhere you go! I have had a good summer thou, and am.so glad I got to do all the things I've done.
DeleteI can't believe I missed this. I'm behind, but argh. Anyway! How has no one commented on the throwaway comment that you had a "harrowing ride through the Navajo Nation before accepting a ride with a semi truck driver"??!??! Holy bananas, Kyria. I'm trying to figure out if I would have been as brave, tbh. (And a bear, too? Good grief. I'm glad you are safe and I'm glad you have had such an amazing few months.)
ReplyDeleteThe semi driver, Dave was a very nice guy! Haha. Way nicer than the harrowing road ride! The bear ran away as soon as he smelled me (pee-ew!) I wish we would have been able to connect but there's always next time!
