Twenty Questions (E17): My Capitol Collections

As soon as I saw Birchie's post about State Capitols a while back (she also collects, and ranks, state flags), I knew I had to do a post of my own about my "Capitol Collections." However, I have so many that I thought I would do a list of 20 of them. Some of these I have posted about before and some I have not, but one day maybe I will expand on some of them. I think that while having no material things, I do collect many experiences, and I definitely collect a lot of photos, so I will talk about a few of them below!

1. I collect street art. The street art everywhere is fascinating, and some is quite good! I am always taking photos of it and love it when I come around a corner and boom, there is a cool piece of art staring you in the face! I will definitely do a post with some of my favorites, but here are a few.

2. I collect space invaders. I had to put this as a separate one, as it is kind of fun! These are everywhere and I first saw them in Lyon and later found out that there is an app where you can collect them when you are traveling and make a game out of it! How fun is that?

3. I collect toe dips. I love dipping my toes into whatever body of water I can find, and sometimes I even dip my entire body. In 2024, when I was riding around, I dipped in all five of the great lakes, and in 2025, I added the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, and the North Sea to my toe dipping list. I don't pass a new body of water without taking a dip!

No mountain too high, no river too cold (PC: Bugsy)

4. I collect states. I have mentioned before that I have been to 43 of the 50 so far, and will eventually get to the last seven. Luckily I have already knocked off Alaska and Hawaii, so the ones I have left could be an easy win if I set my mind to it. I can't tell you my favorite, but let's just say that if it has mountains, I am probably a fan. There are definitely many that I want or need to go back to!

5. I collect countries. As of February 2026, I have been to 70 of them, but I am not really checking boxes because I love going back to places that I have been before. Of the 70, I have been to about 30 of them more than once, and some of them, I have been to more than five times (Austria, Canada, France).

6. I collect baseball stadiums. This is definitely a very casual collection, as it is not something I strive for, but more of something I do if it is convenient. I have been to the Yankee stadium (new), Fenway (Boston), Wrigley (Chicago), Candlestick (old SF Giants), Oracle (new SF Giants), Coliseum (Oakland), Dodgers stadium, and Busch (St. Louis). I have also been to a baseball game in Busan (South Korea) and Yokohama (Japan). (FYI: supposedly there are 30 MLB parks; one in Canada and 29 in the US)

Fenway

7. I collect post cards. I had an entire box full of post cards when I went through my stuff, and I scanned them all because I could not bear to get rid of them. Some of them were from my childhood, some were sent to me when I lived in France, and some were from my grandmother, who passed away a few years ago, but was a prolific letter writer. They are all a glimpse of the past, and I cherish every one of them.

8. I collect hiking trails. I have hiked in at least 50 of the 70 countries I have been to, and probably about 20 of those were overnight hikes. I especially enjoy hiking in countries like Scotland or Sweden, where you can pretty much wild camp where you want. This can be the case in many parts of the U.S. and Canada too.

9. I collect National Parks. I have only been to 19 out of 63, but I am making my way down the list very slowly. I feel like at some point I will acquire a campervan and drive around to many more of them. It's on the to do list.

10. I collect hellos. I think I can say hello in the language of every country that I have been to. Some may take a minute to dredge up, but it is funny how some of them stick. I was last in Japan in 2001, and I still remember how to say hello, good morning, good afternoon, thank you, excuse me, good-bye and good evening. I am also pretty good at remembering bad words and can swear like a sailor in Tagalog. I generally don't greet people like that though.

11. I collect snacks. I love trying new things, and snacks are no exception. I found a favorite cookie in Türkiye, and I could recommend several things at the 7-Eleven in Taiwan. I am not a big sweet fan usually, but do like trying them all, for the sake of data collection, naturally.

12. I collect ice cream. One sweet I never turn down is an ice cream. When I was on a bike, I often would reward myself for a hard day with a tub of ice cream. I have been taking it more easily lately, especially in light of my cholesterol being a bit high, but believe you me, when the girls meet up with me in Thailand we are going to find some and eat it. Although I generally get vanilla or mint chip, I love trying new kinds and some of my favorites are coconut, Thai iced tea, ube, and green tea.

13. I collect travel mishaps. I have done some dumb things while traveling. I've missed trains, planes and buses, I've added an extra zero to a withdrawal amount and ended up with way too much cash, I have forgotten my ATM card...the list goes on and on. You can find more of the stories here

14. I collect book recommendations. I don't use Goodreads to mark "want to read" books anymore, but I do have a wish list on Libby that has, I am embarrassed to admit, 655 books on it. Why so many? Because I keep getting good recommendations, and despite being able to put 34 books on hold at the same time, I still don't have enough room on my holds shelf, so inevitably, they go on my wish list. To be fair, this was imported over from my Overdrive account, which I had for about 10 years before I had Libby, so I have spent a good amount of time collecting them. At this point, it is not really worth culling them, so there they sit. The other thing is that they don't automatically get removed from the wish list after you read them; you have to do that manually. I am not great at doing that, I will admit.

15. I collect hearts. I used to collect heart rocks, but I gave them to my Mom when I moved, and now I just have photos.

16. I collect doors. Who doesn't love a colorful door!? Where does it lead? What is behind it? Why is it so short/tall/round? The stories you can make up are endless.

17. I collect people. I have had the most interesting interactions with people. I don't always seek them out, but when I do, I do love hearing a person's story about where they are from, and what they have done in their lives. When I was in Wales, I was having dinner at a pub, and I met a woman who did tours of the area and we got to chatting about life and travel and it was a wonderful way to pass a couple of hours on a cold night. I talked to a man from Sarajevo who played soccer in the streets as the city was under siege and other people were ducking bullets while doing their daily grocery shopping. As much as I often need alone time, I do love learning about other people and hearing their perspectives. Isn't that what makes the world go round?

An Israeli, an Albanian and an American walk into a bar...

18. I collect old men. I have worked with a lot of older gentlemen and I tend to get along with them quite well. What constitutes an old man, you ask? Well it's hard to say, because I keep getting older and older, but they stay the same age. (5 points if you can name that reference!) Old ladies are okay too, but most of my workplaces have been 80% older men and 10% younger men and 10% women, so when in Rome, you know? I tried to visit one of them in Washington on my bike ride but he did not answer his email, so I fear the worst (although I looked for an obit and did not find one!) I just texted another one today to say hi, and I remember him telling me about 20 years ago about how he had three day long hangovers and I had no idea what he was talking about. Well Steve, now I know what you mean!

A different Steve, who passed away from
cancer at 57, which is NOT old.

19. I collect animals. I don't have one of my own, but believe me, when I see one, I am going to stop and say hi. Be it slimy or slithery or furry, I like all of the creatures of the world. I would love to pick them up sometimes, but I know that is not the best idea at times! And I would never try to pet a bear.

20. Last but not least, for Birchie, I collect Capitols, because, why not? However, I do not usually go inside; I usually just ride or walk by them! Actually, I have been in the California capitol building and the Texas capitol building for sure. I can't really remember if I have been in any others. I have seen the capitol buildings in Boise, St. Paul, DC, and Madison. Sadly, I have been to many of the capital cities, but did not visit the capitol buildings. Sorry Birchie.

The only ones I have photos of:
Boise, Austin, DC, St. Paul & Madison

What collections do you have? How many state (or province or territory etc. depending on where you are from) capitol buildings have you been to?

  1. As of last Monday I had been to 15 capitols/5 legislatures, and as of this Monday I have been to 18 capitols/still 5 legislatures. It was a busy week!

From your list, I collect snacks and book recommendations. I'm very fond of taking pictures of interesting t shirts and mugs in gift shops on my travels. I'm not opposed to buying things, but I rarely find something that passes the test of wanting to carry it around with me or to have it in my house long term.

    1. I do that too! A photo of a mug is just as good as a mug! Photos don't take up space or brainwaves, but they do retain the memory! I need to hear what your favorite snack has been, and I'm looking forward to the next episode of your capitol roundup!

  2. Oh I love this Kyria! What a fun post. I love talking to people wherever I go as well. I also get along well with older people, although for me it's women and men. I always have! I tend to keep cards and postcards, although I did do a big purge when we moved. I have a few heart-shaped rocks as well. Rob and Mark brought one back for me from the Arctic, and the boys used to give them to me when they were small. Book recommendations - of course! Although I'm fussy about who I take them from because not always do our tastes align, you know? I have a large collection of Pandora charms, given to me by the guys mostly, but my parents have given me a few as well. I actually have several bracelets to hold all the charms!

    1. You are the queen of fun random conversations! I love that about you. I am not as friendly but I still enjoy it once I get over my initial hesitation.

I used to keep cards too but I finally scanned them and threw them away. I even had some from my childhood birthdays. I also used to bring my mom rocks from every place I visited! Moms are so fun; what a sign of love to keep accepting all of our rocks!

  3. What fun to see all the cool things you collect! My favorite one of yours is "old men." That made me smile! I have traveled some, but certainly nothing like you. In the US, I've been to Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Florida. Internationally, I've been to France (I was an exchange student for a year), Japan, British Columbia, and Alberta. Yep, that's it! I can't think of anything I collected on those trips. I think the only things I collect are art and sewing supplies!

    1. Collecting art is fun! You also collect doll house furniture and accoutrements, and what a great collection you have of those! As for traveling, you were in France for a year, which is such a different experience than being somewhere for a weekend or a week, so that is a good one!

  4. I love my every single X projects which are similar. We have 46 National Parks just in Victoria (my state) and I have plans to visit or revisit them all, but we have over 600 National Parks in Australia so I don't think I'll get around all of them. It would be interesting to keep a record of how many I have been to. I also like photographing street art and also collected space invaders when I was traveling.

    1. WOW! 600 national parks? I did not know that. That is a lot. I just checked Canada and they only have 48 (parks and reserves)! I also did check Australia, because that is a fascinating fact, and I have been to at least two (Whitsunday and Daintree) but would have to go over the list to recall if I have been to others. I find it interesting that the states or territories actually run many of your national parks. So do you still have "state parks?" For us, if you counted state run parks, I think there are upwards of 6,000 of those in the U.S.

    2. In Victoria have 25 state parks, which are usually similar but smaller than the national parks. We also have 3 wilderness parks which are managed for conservation only, with no visitors and no roads. Plus 5 indigenous protected areas (managed for conservation by indigenous groups) and 13 marine national parks. Other protected areas include regional parks that focus on providing more hiking and other recreational opportunities like mountain biking closer to population centres and often allow dogs.

    3. Wow, I am significantly impressed. Also a bit surprised at myself that I did not go to very many of them. At least I don't think that I did, but maybe I passed through without realizing?

  5. I sort of collect Christmas ornaments but I am not always good about buying an ornament for every place I visit! I'm trying to be better about it, though, as it's a nice way to memorialize a visit! And it doesn't take up too much space!

It's been awhile since I counted how many states I've been to. I just quickly counted and I've been to 31. I only count the state as a state I've visited if I spend the night in the state. So later this month, I will add Georgia to the list as I have a trip to Atlanta for work. And then in May I will cross Maine off the list as I have work trip to the Portland, ME area. So the number grows each year, mostly thanks to work travel!

    1. Christmas ornaments are a good one. They also are put away a lot, so it becomes kind of a special thing to bring them out, and talk about the memories each year. I am also pretty strict on my state counting. Driving through doesn't count, or a layover on the plane. In fact, I think I have actually been to S. Dakota, but I am fairly sure I only had lunch in Sioux Falls then left. However, since I can't really remember anyway, I am not counting it!

  6. I adore this post and the concept of collections. You have a lot of really fun collections! My favorite might be the old men, lol.

Let's see. I would say I collect books. Based on my drawers, it might seem that I collect leggings and T-shirts, also, lol. But that's not intentional.

    1. Hah! I laughed at your legging collection! I think we all have several inadvertent collections! I used to collect dust bunnies, those rubber bands you get on vegetables, and grocery shopping bags. Even though we don't use plastic ones, I still ended up with a bunch!

  7. When I was teaching, I collected the phrase "Do you understand?" in as many languages as I could. I did this so that I could ask that every time I gave directions in class aloud. It was my way of driving home the point to my students that I wanted them to understand, that they should be listening and following directions, and if they didn't, WHAT THE HECK LANGUAGE DID THEY SPEAK THAT THEY DIDN'T BOTHER ASKING A QUESTION?

Another thing I collect is neighbourhood dogs and their names. I make it a practice of knowing all the dogs who live in or are walked in my neighbourhood. I have little biscuits at the ready to give them, too. It's not unusual for there to be a dog walking down the street and for me to say, "Do I know that dog?" It's now a family joke ("Mom!/Nance! Do you know that dog?") no matter where we are.

I also collect (and read!) books about President and First Lady Abraham and Mary Lincoln and all aspects of his presidency and her life. I find them both fascinating and tragic. This obsession started a long, long time ago.

I love your collections. They really brought to mind a lot of memories for me.

    1. Nance! Are you British? You spell neighborhood with a U? I love it. I also love your way of getting the students to pay attention (to some extent). I had a Spanish teacher who used to lie on his desk and throw his pencil at the holes in the ceiling to see if they would stick, and we would count, uno, dos, etc. as he did it. I am not that great at Spanish, but I remember his eccentricities! Haha. Your students probably recall you yelling at them in German or whatever language.

It is amazing that you know all of the dogs names, but also funny, as even when I go to my friend's house in Oregon and walk her dog, I know the other dogs' names but don't know the neighbor's names! Bad human.

    2. Kyria! I am not British or Canadian, but I have read so much Brit Lit that it became second nature to adopt their spelling. Also, I can't resist an affectation when it comes to style in my writing. ; )

Like you, I know the dogs but not their humans. It's funny--neither of us has ever thought to introduce ourselves. We're just happy to chat without knowing each other's name whilst I pet their dog. (And this is without exception!)

    3. I love your affectation. I still can't remember if I am supposed to spell inquire with an "e" or an "i," or grey with an "e" or an "a."

  8. Yes, I know you collect street art!
Gee, driving around to all the National Parks in a campervan sounds kind of lonely. I mean, what I'm saying is, if you're looking for a companion for that adventure, I'll be happy to help you out!!!

    1. Jenny! I would love a companion. Maybe we can drive around and look at states with good mountains and weather and call it a fact finding mission! When can you start? :)

  9. We are the same on the ice cream front. I'm in a similar cholesterol boat too - unfortunately. This was a fun bunch of collections. Love the video of you swimming. We have done quite a few national parks too. What do I collect? Based on my overflowing google photots, etc. photos of babies. It's an occupational hazard. ;)

    1. Well there could be worse hazards, I guess. Nothing wrong with a cute baby or two! If we ever meet in person, we will say too bad to the cholesterol monster and have an ice cream date!

  10. Ooh I love these collections! I also collect states - I have been to 48 of 50 and someday I will get to Kentucky and North Dakota and then I will have been to all of them!

I think your "old men" collection is the funniest. I do not have one of these.

I love the dips though! Collecting water is definitely a good use of time

    1. With the states, you are so close! I think you could knock out both of those in a long weekend. I went to the Kentucky derby, which was actually quite fun, despite the fact that I am not a gambler! I think I won $1.23 or some random small amount. I do love a good dip in a body of water, although I used to do it a lot more than I do now. I think I have gotten softer in my old age...
