After hanging with my friends and their kids in Scotland recently, it reminded me of the first time I heard some Scottish words and wondered what the heck they were saying. My first recollection is the song Loch Lomond, as my Mom sang it to me. If you haven't heard it, the chorus goes:
O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.
So my first Scottish word was probably bonnie, but over the years I learned many more. It is funny though as the different regions also have different accents and the people from Glasgow seem to have the hardest one to understand. So sometimes if they are drunk or I don't know they are talking to me, I don't even understand what they are saying at all!

Some of these are ones I learned long ago and others are ones I talked about recently with my friend. It would be fun if you copy and paste them into the comments and then just guess what they mean! I will put a link to the answer key at the bottom so you can see how many you got right or close (and you can post again your number if you want to!) Good luck, or should I say lang may yer lum reek (long may your chimney smoke)!!

The only one I knew was eejit - same in Ireland. The rest were all guesses.
These are some good guesses! I think the only one you got right was eejit! :) I do like that you say steamin is a cute girl because that is wrong, but they do say "she's a stoater" when they are talking about a hot girl, so you were close!
DeleteI 100% feel like bairn is a child or baby. I should know more because I'm mostly Scottish, but, you know, Canadian. Rob and I have been watching Three Doors Down on BBC (or is it Two Doors Down? I forget) and sometimes we put on the subtitles, and honestly it isn't that helpful to have the subtitles. I love UK accents!
ReplyDeleteYou are right! They say the same in Ireland too. That is where I actually first heard it; I was at a family reunion of one of my friends. His Mom is one of 18 and there were so many people, including a bunch of kids. I have never seen Three or Two Doors, but the accents are fun. I also love how regional they are. I know we have that too to some degree, but it feels so much more pronounced to me in the UK. Like if someone is from Leeds, you will know it!
DeleteHmmm. I have no idea for most of these! How fun.

DeleteHa, I am LOVING everyone's guesses! I can't do better than that. I think I know "bairn" and "eejit." But... manky? numpty? What is wrong with these people??? (ha ha...)
