What an Endeavour!

Last Thursday, I got a phone call from my Mom. She is a big space buff, from things like this:

To things like this:

In case you are not familiar with either of those, the top one is the Mars Rover, which was sent to Mars to search for and characterize rocks and soils that hold clues to past evidence of water on Mars... the bottom is Quark, a Ferengi on the Starship Enterprise.

She is also a fan of the NASA image of the day site, which features images like this:

So, back to her call. She called me to tell me that the Space Shuttle Endeavour would be going over the Bay Area around 9 am on Friday. I have to admit, I did not know that, and when I looked it up online, it was supposed to go over my house around 8:30. Of course, I would be at work, so I would not be able to see it.

Bummer.

But on Friday, as I was working, I heard a shout, and I looked over to see....The Endeavour! I work in a skyscraper and we are pretty high up, so we had a nice view of the shuttle going past the Golden Gate bridge and around the bay. It took a full circle around the bay, and therefore around our building. Everyone was running from window to window trying to see it.

First of all, it was huge. I tried to get a photo with my iPhone but it doesn't show it very well, but it was pretty darn close to us, pretty close to the ground and pretty darn cool! Here are a few (bad) photos! I circled it so you can see it a little bit. Also, if you look really close at the third photo, you can see people on all of the rooftops!

Did anyone else see the Endeavour? Is anyone else a Star Trek buff? What interesting hobbies/likes do your parents have?

  1. So cool you got to see it! We live not far from NASA Goddard and one of my friends is a scientist there. She geeks on all things space related and is always keeping us up on stuff to check out.

  3. Total space nerd, I mean buff, here....before my kids were born I was a "Galaxy Guide" at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science's space exhibit. How fun that you got to see the shuttle! I once saw a launch in Florida--pretty cool.

  7. I'm jealous you got to see that! I really resented my parents for a couple of years when I was a kid because they wouldn't send me to space camp. (Now I realize there's no way they could have afforded that, but at the time it was a grave injustice.)

  8. I saw it! It did the most amazing tour of LA. I think everyone around here got to see it, my FB news feed was full of picture after picture. Both of my kids did, it went over my husband's school. I got to see it out my bedroom window. So amazing. My iPhone pictures were lame too.

  9. I didn't see the Endeavor, other than on TV and in a rash of Facebook updates by friends. But, I sort of love how it's one of those things that brings people together, wherever you are, you've got your finger on it.

  11. A guy in our Sacramento office sent me some awesome pictures of the Endeavor. I had no idea it was flying that day but we happened to talk in the afternoon so he sent me the photos. Pretty cool!

I have absolutely no interest in Star Trek but my oldest brother loves it!

  12. I didn't get to see it because I was at work, but I wasn't too disappointed because I fully plan to go see it when the exhibit opens at the Science Center.

I'm mostly a fan of Next Gen. The alert tone on my phone is the door chime on the Enterprise. Yes, yes, I'm a geek...
